Four Main Schools of Thought and Markings of Different Sects

1.Vaishnavas, who worship Lord Vishnu and Krishna.2. Shaivites, who worship Lord Siva.3. Shaktas, who worship the goddess Durga or Kali.4. Smartas, who worship five major deities: Vishnu, Siva, Shakti, Ganesh, and Surya, the sun-god.

Worshipers of Siva may also worship Ganesh and Karttikeya (Skanda), Siva’s sons. Shaktas may worship the many forms of Durga, such as Parvati or Kali. Durga is the most commonly worshiped form and has many temples of her own throughout India.
The different sects wear different markings on their foreheads, chests, and arms to identify to which sect they belong (the markings are applied also to sanctify the body). You can tell the difference between the sects by the forehead marks. Vertical marks mean devotees of Vishnu; horizontal marks indicate devotees of Siva. Siva’s devotees usually wear rudraksha beads around their necks, while devotees of Vishnu or Krishna wear tulasi beads.
Worshipers of Siva have two or more horizontal lines, with or without a dot above or below them. Also a crescent moon or a trident, Siva’s own markings, indicate a Shaivite. There may also be an oval or half-oval, said to symbolize Siva’s third eye.
Vaishnavas are divided into worshipers of Lord Krishna and his consort Radha, worshipers of Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, and worshipers of Lord Rama and his consort Sita. Lord Krishna is often worshiped by himself or with Rukmini, his chief wife. Often Krishna and Vishnu are worshiped in temples alone, without their consorts. Often each type of worshiper has their own sectarian markings.
Deities of Ganesh or Karttikeya wear the marks of Siva on them. Krishna, Rama, Hanuman, and Indra have the marks of Vishnu on them. Brahma has the markings of both Vishnu and Siva on him.
These markings are made of tilaka (sacred clay), ashes from a sacred fire, cow dung, sandalwood, turmeric, or lime. They may be yellow, red, black, or ashen white.
Vaishnava PhilosophyVaishnava philosophy accepts that there is only one God. He takes many names and forms in different religions. Christians call him Jehovah, Muslims, Allah, and Hindus, Vishnu or Krishna. According to Vaishnavas, Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and all other gods and living entities are his servants. This is the essential difference between material life and spiritual life. Spiritual life means that God is the object of our service, and material life means our service is devoid of relationship with God.
A common misconception is that Krishna is an incarnation of Vishnu. Actually, Krishna is supreme. Even though Vishnu and Krishna are nondifferent, still, one expanded from the other. According to scripture, Vishnu is an expansion of Krishna. The analogy is that when one candle lights another, they both have the same potency, but one is always the original flame. Vishnu is the administrative form of Lord Krishna, who is always engaged in enjoying with his devotees.
Another common misconception is that God is ultimately formless. If one accepts that God is all-powerful, then why is he not powerful enough to be a person? Rather, it is seen that behind all energy a person is working. A common idea is that Lord Siva is supreme, but according to Vaishnava philosophy even Lord Siva, who is very powerful, is Vishnu’s servant. Also there is the misconception that there are many gods in Hinduism, but according to Vaishnava philosophy there is only one God, which is commonly accepted by most religions.
KarmaKarma refers to the scientific law of cause and effect. Whatever we do will come back to us at a later date, if not in this lifetime, in a future birth. From time immemorial, the individual soul has been acting in the material world and enjoying or suffering the reactions. His actions bring about his transmigration from one material body to another. Both pious and impious actions bind a person to this wheel of transmigration, because both piety and impiety create a reaction. Everyone creates their own karma out of their particular desires to enjoy this world in different ways. Neither God nor anyone else can be held responsible for our karma; we create our own destiny.
In one sense, all karma is bondage. Even pious activities bind a person to the material world. The goal of life is to be free from karma, and to therefore become free from the wheel of repeated birth and death. A person cannot become free from karma simply by renouncing activity. He or she must engage in transcendental activities—that is, by serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who will then intervene and free us from previous karmic reactions.
BhaktiBhakti refers to the expression of love, service, and devotion to a personal God. The Bhagavad-gita presents bhakti-yoga as the highest process, and Arjuna is asked to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna, without a motive other than love and without material consideration. Bhakti-yoga is opposed to the concept of becoming one with the Supreme. It is believed that service to God is eternal and that the individual soul is never equal to or becomes God. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramanujacharya, and Madhvacarya all taught the bhakti path as the most efficient means to reach God realization.
MantraA mantra is a Vedic hymn that causes the mind to meditate on a particular deity. A mantra is meant to be received by a bone fide guru if it is to have complete effect. The mantra can consist of only one word, such as OM (aum), or it can consist of multiple syllables or words. A mantra is usually repeated many times. Often one keeps track of the repetitions on beads. This practice is called japa. Japa is performed when a person constantly repeats a mantra so that only he or she can hear it. Sadhus may chant over a 100,000 names of God in a day. Great care much be taken to chant the mantra correctly and with attention if the practitioner wishes to receive the ultimate benefit the mantra offers.
Gaudiya Vaishnavas consider that by chanting the Lord’s holy names, specifically the mantra, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare, one will attain transcendental devotion to God. It is considered that Krishna and his name are nondifferent.
Shaivites chant the mantra Om Namah Shivaya. Another famous mantra is Sree Ram Jaya Ram, Jaya Jaya Ram/ Sree Ram Jaya Ram, Jaya Jaya Ram.
The most famous mantras are the gayatri-mantra and OM (aum). There are many other mantras in Hinduism.
Shalagram-shilasShalagram-shilas are self-manifested Deities of Lord Vishnu or Krishna appearing as small stones. These stones are sold on the streets in Kathmandu and look like fossils. Shalagram-shilas are usually collected from the Gandhaki River in Nepal, near Muktinatha. They are often black or a dark color, and are round or oval. Brahmins usually worship Shalagram-shilas in their homes.

Self healing

No doctor, no drug, no object has ever truly healed anyone. They can only assist if they act in harmony with the Laws of Nature. Our mind body system is designed to HEAL ITSELF. All we need to do is to REMOVE OBSTACLES from the body and from the mind. This can be accomplished with or without the help of others.

If you cut your finger with a sharp object, the wound HEALS ITSELF and if the damage is not extensive, the repair job is SO perfect, that after a few weeks you cannot even remember which finger was hurt. Even the fingerprints are reconstructed.
Of course self-healing is not limited to scratches and bruises. Exactly the same self-healing processes occur ALL THE TIME in ALL POSSIBLE organs of the body.
Even if we abuse our body, it tries to heal itself, unless the damage is extensive and we continue doing mistakes for years. Severe illnesses are largely result of our complete ignorance on both: the physical level (diet, poisoning, lifestyle) as well as on the mental level (bad mental hygiene and discipline, wrong understanding of
purpose of life). Pain and suffering are just signals to our conscious mind that we have to CHANGE our ways. When we do, in the right direction, we "miraculously" recover. When we follow the flock, and resist Nature, we suffer. This is the law of Nature.
The mind-body system has almost unlimited self repair capabilities, but most of people deny themselves any access to them.
The biggest mistake you can make is to ACCEPT someone's "advice" that your condition is incurable. If you accept such an advice, your fear effectively SABOTAGES the self-healing process, which is under complete control of your consciousness on all levels, including the subconscious functioning of your body and mind. Fear blocks any logic, dramatically reducing your own self healing ability.
There is nothing the Universe to be afraid of, except our own ignorance and its consequences. Unfortunately most people doubt everyone and everything, except their own ignorance.
The idea of "incurable" or "chronic" condition comes simply from limited understanding of healing processes and/or arrogant attitude of people who claim to be "health" authorities but have never seen a true recovery.

Spiritual Healing

Spirituality involves the recognition and acceptance of a God beyond our own intelligence and with whom we can have a relationship. This God can provide an experience of inspiration, joy, security, peace of mind, and guidance that goes beyond what is possible in the absence of the conviction that such a power exists.
Spiritual healing is when energy is transmitted to the person who needs it. The treatment works on the body, mind and spirit, which are seen as one unit that must harmonize for good health. If a separate healer is involved, the healer will place the hand on the person being treated to channel the energy from the Higher Source. The spiritual healing can help mental and emotional problems and physical conditions such as a frozen shoulder.
What is spiritual healing?
The channeling of healing energy from its spiritual source to someone who needs it is called spiritual healing. The channel is usually a person, whom we call a healer, and the healing energy is usually transferred to the patient through the healer's hands. The healing does not come from the healer, but through him. On the other hand, you don’t need a healer to take advantage of spiritual healing. You can pray. A full treatmnet of prayer and healing is found elsewhere.
The word "spiritual" refers to the divine nature of the energy, which healers agree comes from one external, invisible intelligent source. The healing energy from this source is available to all.
Healers see the body mind and spirit as one interdependent unit and believe all three must work in harmony to maintain positive health. Any problem - be it a broken leg or depression needs the power of healing to restore the balance of the whole person. It is felt that sickness often starts in the mind, or at the deeper level of the spirit, and it is often here that healing begins.
New Age and The Dawning of a New Era
New Age is a loose term that includes everything from self improvement programs to awareness of mind-body connections. The movement is growing by leaps and bounds.
Time magazine reported that in 1996, about 44 million Americans identified with the healing movement. It is estimated that Americans alone spend about $1.5 billion annually on books about spirituality and religion. About 42 percent of Americans have sought out alternative health care. So, there is no doubt that the movement is catching on.
"There is a hunger for being connected with a divine force. The hunger is not just for philosophy, but for experience," says James Redfield, author of ‘Celestial Prophecy’.
"The consciousness I am describing – the perception of synchronisticity, mysterious coincidences – represent great opportunities to grow. That process works whether you are a brain surgeon or sacking groceries. Consciousness has the ability to break cycles of poverty."
Specific Benefits of Developing Your Spirituality
Edmund Bourne, author of ‘The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook,’ has described a number of benefits to spirituality as it applies to healing emotional problems. Dr. Burke has personal experience of his patients benefiting from a deep spirituality. He has listed a number of benefits that are gained through spirituality. These are:
Security and Safety
Through developing a connection with God, you gain security through the conviction that you are not all alone in the universe, even at those times when you feel temporarily separated from other people. You feel increasingly safe as you come to believe that there is a source you can always turn to in times of difficulty. As the twenty third psalm says, "
God is my shepherd," he will take care of me and won’t let me get into trouble if I trust him. There is much security to be gained through the understanding that there is no problem or difficulty that cannot be resolved through the help of God.
Peace of Mind
Peace of mind is the result of feeling a deep, abiding sense of security and safety. The more reliance and trust you develop in God, the easier it becomes to deal without fear or worry with the inevitable challenges life brings. It is not that you give up your self or your will to such a power; rather you simply learn that you can "let go" and turn to God when you feel stuck with a problem in living and don't know how to proceed. Learning how to let go when solutions to problems aren't immediately apparent can go a long way toward reducing worry and anxiety in your life. Peace of mind is what develops in the absence of such anxiety.
Self-Confidence
As you develop a relationship with God, you come to realize that he has created you and hence he has found something good in you. You are part of the universe. You're good, lovable, and worthy of respect just by virtue of the fact that you're God’s creation. This realization can improve the way you look at yourself and will help you to improve your ego and what you think of yourself. You are still inherently good and worthwhile. Your own judgments of yourself, however negative, do not ultimately count if you are a creation of the universe as much as everything else. As one person put it: "God doesn't make junk."
The Capacity To Give and Receive Unconditional Love
The most fundamental characteristic of God is that it offers you an experience of unconditional love. This is a kind of love which differs from romantic love or even ordinary friendship. It entails an absolute caring for the welfare of another without any preconditions. That is, no matter how another person appears or acts, you have compassion and care for them without judgment. As you develop a deeper connection with God, you come to experience greater degrees of unconditional love in your life. You feel your heart opening more easily to people and their concerns. You feel freer of judgment toward them or of making comparisons among them. Unconditional love shows up both in your increased capacity to give love to others and to experience more of it coming into your life. You begin to experience less fear and more joy in your life and help to inspire others to experience their own capacity for unconditional love. This kind of love also manifests itself through the experience of having everything you need in your life to get on with what you want to do.
Guidance
Developing a relationship with God will provide you with guidance for making decisions and solving problems. God has a universal wisdom that goes beyond what you can accomplish through your own intellect. In traditional religions this has been referred to as the "divine intelligence." Through connecting with God, you can draw upon this greater wisdom to help you resolve all kinds of difficulties. By learning to ask God for guidance, you'll be surprised to find that every sincere request sooner or later is answered. And the quality of that answer generally exceeds what you could have figured out through your own conscious intellect or will. Here, God is like your co-pilot. God is always available in the instant of need to those who have made a habit of waiting quietly before Him for insight and guidance.
Follow these guidelines for an effective relationship with God:
Be quiet, patient, and open before God
Be confident that he will communicate his wishes and help you execute them.
Do not tempt God or make terms with Him. Gandhi said, "Not until we have reduced ourselves to nothingness, can we conquer the evil in us. God demands nothing less than complete self-surrender as the price for the only real freedom that is worth having. And when a man thus loses himself, he immediately finds himself in the service of all that lives. It becomes his delight and his recreation."
Be willing to accept what God provides. He knows best. "Thy will, not mine, be done." Have full trust in the wisdom of God.
Ask for God’s help. Do not instruct him on what to do.
Let God speak to you through his Word. Read spiritual and religious books such as the Bible and learn about the rules of victorious living.
These are some of the characteristics that define a close relationship with God. All of them can significantly contribute to your personal healing process. The extent and sincerity of your commitment will determine the degree of personal healing you experience.
Outside Help: Healing Practitioners, Intercessory Prayers, etc.
Healers:
Healers believe that everyone has a healing mechanism that flows as an energy force around the body, mind and spirit to keep them in perfect order. Unfortunately, stress, an inadequate diet, a negative attitude and other adverse factors can block our healing mechanism so that it cannot function correctly and we get ill. Spiritual healing provides the energy needed to crank our own healing mechanism back into action. When a healer lays his hand on you, he acts as a conductor or channel for the healing energy which he believes has the "intelligence" to go where it is needed.
Healers say that all of us have the power to heal, if we choose to develop it. However, some do seem to have a healing gift.
Healing does not always work at a physical level; the illness may remain but the ability to cope with it improves. Sometimes it does not work at all. This may be because the sick person "blocks" the healing forces - some people subconsciously prefer to be ill. It may also be because we "need" to remain ill.
Healing is not just about living well, but also dying well. People healed when they are dying may die more peacefully.
Typically, to begin the treatment the healer will attune with the healing energy. Then he may scan your body, with his hands hovering just above you. This scanning is to take a reading of your body's energy levels and to locate areas of low or blocked energy where healing is needed. How long the healer spends on each area is determined by your body's needs. Generally, the session lasts about an hour. All healers work in this way, but some employ additional healing tools such as visualization, past lives therapy, aura healing or they may concentrate on using the "chakras" the seven main energy centers of the body.
During the treatment you may feel heat coming from the healer's hands, although some people feel a draught, a tingling sensation, pins and needles, or a feeling of fight-headedness. Afterwards, most people say they feel relaxed and peaceful, although you might feel thirsty or sleepy. Leave a few days or a week between sessions to give the healing time to work.
Intercessory Prayers:
Many Christians ask saints and others to intercede on their behalf. People pray for others. Your chance of healing can be improved substantially if you can get others to pray for you. The scientific evidence for the efficacy of such prayers is described elsewhere.
Which problems can Spiritual Healing help?
Spiritual healing can help with any problem, mental, physical or emotional. Healers are especially effective for musculo-skeletal problems. Such as frozen shoulders, stiff necks and bad knees.

The Five Limbs (Panchanga) of Bala

Listen, Virachamunda, to the characteristics of jiva. It is supreme, whole, eternal, consisting of nothing, stainless. It is the ultimate atomic particle, the Natha, it is supreme Shiva, all pervading, it is above all, it is Hamsa, the soul of Shakti. It is the mind, the breath, the buddhi and the chitta, residing in the inspiration and expiration of the breath of all living beings. - Kaulajnananirnaya, VI, 4-6.
This is the first English translation of the five limbs, or panchanga, of the aspect of Goddess known as Bala Tripura. Bala means "girl", this aspect of the Red Goddess is the most highly erotic of Her three aspects, as the 1,000 names show. Bala is an adolescent woman, Tripurasundari a mother, and Tripurabhairavi a woman in whom menstruation has ceased.
Bala's root mantra is aim klim sauh and variations of this mantra are used in her daily ritual. Many tantrik devatas have manuals structured along similar lines. The devata is first visualised as residing in the heart, then later drawn out through the breath and "placed" in the yantra. On installation or invocation, various ritual accessories are offered, and the 1,000 adjectives (names) of the particular deity recited. The Devi is then drawn 'back' into one's heart, and the ritual concludes with various elements "cleaning up" the area of worship.
The five limbs of a ritual panchanga are Patala, Paddhati, Kavacha (Armour), 1,000 Names, and Stotra. The first gives the unfolding of the mantra, usually in coded form. It also describes the meditation image and the yantra of the devata, as well as various optional rites. The second limb describes the ritual worship, including worship of the avarana or attendants of the devata, which are really aspects of the god or goddess. The kavacha is an "armour" used to ward off evil and which may either be recited or written and then worn on the body. The fourth limb consists of the 1,000 names, of which there are very many sets in the tantrik literature. The fifth, the Stotra, is the hymn of praise of the ishtadevata, the tutelary devata of a tantrik sadhaka.
This particular manual comes from the
Devirahasya, a large work which contains many other panchangas relating to different aspects of Shiva and Shakti.
Bala Patala
Seated on Kailasa Summit is Bhagavan, spouse of Uma, the God with a crescent Moon as His diadem, whose eyes are Sun, Moon and Fire, wearing an elephant skin, mighty, worshipped by the Gods, bowed to by hosts of Gandharvas, mighty Yakshas, and by gods and demons.
Having recited mantra, and having read sacred texts, rising up and bowing, Bhairavi questions the Lord.
Shri Bhairavi - Lord God, Ocean of Compassion, who reveals all Agamas, by Your grace I have heard of all the Vidyas, O Sureshvara. Now I would like to hear of Bala Tripurasundari. If this can be spoken of, declare the Vidya, O God Maheshvara.
Shri Bhairava -- Listen Devi, I speak of the five Limbed Manual (Panchanga) desired by sadhakas, (which consists of) Patala, Paddhati, Armour, 1,000 Names and King of Hymns. O Mahadevi, listen one-pointedly. Parameshani, Shri Bala is the Goddess bestowing both enjoyment and Liberation.
O Mahadevi, one may give away power, dominion, house and wealth. All these may be given away, but one should never give away this thing which is the best of all. In the Kali Yuga there is no other Vidya resembling this Vidya. It is said that Shri Bala Tripura gives siddhi quickly.
It should be passed on to peaceful disciples, and to those devoted to their Guru. One should not give this Vidya to the undevoted, O Parameshvari.
I will speak of the unfolding of the mantra, yantra, prastara, meditation, and the rites of the Devi, O Maheshvari. First, Deveshi, listen to the unfolding of the Mantra which bestows all fruit. It should be carefully concealed, whoever knows it becomes successful (Siddha).
One should place "Shakti" (Sauh) at the end of 'Vagbhava" (Aim) and "Kamaraja" (Klim), ending this with Namah. O Devi, this is the eight lettered Mantra of Bala. (There are) no obstacles, or impurity or restrictions attached to it, it causes one to become a Siddha, O Mahadevi, and is the King of Mantras in the Kali Yuga.
Dakshinamurti is the Seer, Pankti is the Metre for pronunciation, the Goddess if Tripura-Bala, "Aim" is the Seed, "Sauh" the Shakti. "Klim" is the linchpin. Its application is towards Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
One should do (six fold) Nyasa on the head, on the mouth, in the heart, on the feet, on the navel lotus and in all the limbs, O Devi.
One should do Nyasa according to the rules doing Seer, Hand and Limb nyasa, using the bijas of the mantra, O Maheshvari.
Now I speak of Her meditation, advantageous for all sadhakas:
I meditate on Bala, clothed in red, with a digit of the Moon as Her ornament, effulgent as the rising sun, with three eyes, holding a book and a rosary, showing the gestures of removing fear and giving, seated on a red lotus.
Having meditated in this way one should repeat the mantra which gives success. A pure sadhaka should prepare (the mantra by reciting it) 300,000 times.
Now I speak of the unfolding of the Yantra of Mahadevi, the Giver of both Enjoyment and Liberation, which is very hard to get to know of for any sadhaka.
Bindu, triangle, eight triangles, eight petals, adorned with three circles and enclosed in an earthsquare. This circle of Bala (and Her attendants) is the Destroyer of Pain, O Mountain-Born One!
One should worship the Shaktis of the pedestal when inscribing the Yantra. The pedestal Shaktis are Will (Iccha), Knowledge (Jnana), Action (Kriya), Lotus-Girl (Kamini), Giver of Sexuality (Kamadayini), Sexual Pleasure (Rati), Loving the Bliss of Sexual Pleasure (Ratipriyananda), and Mind-Born (Manonmani) lastly. One should place these Shaktis round the pedestal using the mantra "Vyoma Parvata Tartiya Sadashiva Mahapadam Pitha Padmasanaya Namah". This is the pedestal Mantra. Having put, in order, these 16 syllables around the image (Yantra) one should recite the root mantra.
One should invoke Devi and worship Her with the ritual accessories according to the rules. Having invoked the desired Devi in the centre of the yoni, one should worship in the triangle, in a similar way Sexual Love (Rati) on the left, Pleasure (Priti) on the right, and Mind-Born (Manobhava) at the apex. One should worship the six Limbs inside the yoni (i.e. central triangle) starting from the South East.
Outside the central yoni one should worship, from the East, in a clockwise direction, the Arrow-Devis. In the eight yoni-triangles one should worship the eight Shaktis called Beautiful Bhaga (Bhaga=female sexual organ), Bhaga, Nectar of Bhaga, Bhaga adorned with Flowers, Primordial Sexual Pleasure, The Flower of Sex, the Girdle of Sex, the Bliss of Sexual Love - these are the eight Shaktis.
In the filaments of the lotus one should worship Brahmi and so forth, and in the petals themselves the (eight) Bhairavas. One should also worship, in the petal tips, from the East in a clockwise direction, the Sacred Sites called Kamarupa, Malaya, Kaulagiri, Cauhara, Kulantaka, Jalandhara and Oddyana -- the eighth being Devikuta.
In the bhupura one should worship in the cardinal directions Heruka, Tripurantaka, Vetala, Agnijihva, Kalantaka, Kapalini, Ekapada, Bhimarupa, Mala and Hatakeshvara. (Also) in the directions one should worship Indra and the others with the (various) weapons.
Outside of this, in the directions, one should worship Vatuka, the Yoginis, Kshetrapala and Ganesha. In the intermediate points one should worship the (eight) Vasus, the Sun, and Shiva. One should worship all the elements and then the weapons.
First of all one should meditate on Bala in the embrace of Kameshvara in the centre; A Kaula should worship using the five makaras according to the rules of Kaulachara.
The sadhaka skilled in the mantra should worship Mahadevi in the bindu (of the yantra) with scent, unhusked rice, flowers, incense, flame and liquid oblation. This is called Layanga.
Listen to the rituals, O Parvati. Whosoever skilled in mantra who does this gains a share of success swiftly, it is certain. The (eight rites) are Paralysing, Deluding, Killing, Attracting, Subjugating, Driving Away, Peace Making and Healing.
This sadhana is the Quintessence, invisible, Dear One. One should not give this to those undevoted to Devi, and should keep it concealed and secret from pashus.
(1) On the first day of the Waxing Moon, Devi, having bathed and done the daily rite, one should go to a deserted place at midday. There one should do sacrifice by a 10th part using ghee, curd and so forth. One should do oblation to the Goddess, then immediately one is free to paralyse, this is certain.
(2) At dusk, in the cremation ground, one should recite (the mantra) on a seat made of owl feathers. One should do much sacrifice and by a tenth part of this give ghee, wine, grain, shoots and lotus seeds. Then one may delude the world.
(3) Having gone in the morning or at night to the place of Ghosts and Elementals (Cremation Ground), the mighty Hero should recite the Vidya of 16 letters in front of a cremation pyre. The mantrin should do much sacrifice of ghee, fragrant gums and hairs of chandalas in the burning funeral pyre. (In this way) one kills an enemy.
(4) On an eighth day of the Bright Fortnight the sadhaka should recite (the mantra) in secret. Having recited a myriad times using the root Vidya, and having meditated, O Charming One, one should do sacrifice of a 10th part giving ghee, lac, flowers, menstrual blood, wheat and bamboo shoots. (Then) one may attract women.
(5) Dearest, on a ninth day the ritualist, having bathed and done the daily rite, should offer much ghee, fish, eggs, lotus, pearls, and hair of deer. Doing sacrifice in this way, O Lady of Heroes, one is able to make people slaves.
(6) On the fourth Lunar Day of a Dark Fortnight one should recite the mantra at the arising of the Moon, Dearest. On a riverbank, seated in Shirsha Asana, the Hero should recite the mantra many times. One should sacrifice a 10th part of this, giving ghee, blue lotus, cloves, black pepper and tamarind. Then one may cause an enemy to flee.
(7) On a fifth night, O Deveshi, one should recite the mantra a myriad times. One should sacrifice a 10th of that and should offer ghee, fish, sugar cane and camphor - thus one may calm down great disputes, wars and adversities.
(8) On a great eighth day (of the dark Lunar fortnight) a person1 having bathed, should do sadhana on the best of pedestals. The hero should recite (the mantra) 10,000 times and should sacrifice a 10th part of that, giving ghee, camphor, grapes, many betel leaves, goat flesh and blood. Then one causes healing to occur.
This thing which is secret is the form of all, my very Self, O Deveshi, Secret. One should conceal it in the Kali Yuga. On Sundays etc. one should recite the mantra 10,000 times. Then one becomes Siddha, there should be no doubt about this! This celestial chapter is revealed because of Your love. Hide it! It should be concealed, hide it as You would conceal Your own yoni.
Shri Bala Paddhati
Now I will declare the Paddhati in its spoken form - the essence of Shri Bala Tripureshvari, the Giver of Happiness. Having done morning acts those who are devoted should worship Devi. This puja is fruitless for those impure at the Three (Twilights).
Extending from the base of the spine to the top of the head, like a lotus stem, a brilliant, white, slender thread, one should meditate on Devi, Giver of Subjugation, Great Good Fortune and Eloquence; as surrounded by a swarm of black bees; with braided hair garlanded with flowers; with a face marked with a jewel as her forehead mark; her mouth sweetly smiling, wearing a beautiful diadem; her head adorned with pearls and diamonds; with a slender crescent Moon as crest gem; her three bright eyes effulgent as a swarm of sapphire bees; with jewelled coiled earrings, the chief of which is as bright as the Sun: ornamented with shining pearls and gems of dazzling appearance; around her throat a necklace like a line of bees, beautiful and bedazzling, surpassing nectar in its beauty; adorned with beautiful and resplendent garments like the white water of the Ganga in flood; beautiful, sinuous graceful limbs, scented and sweet like creeping vines; covered in gold and by other precious metals, and by glistening jewels, glittering and bright; her beautiful feet and toes like red lotuses with their petals; as bright as the circle of the starry realm (Nakshatras); adorned with pearl-like blossoms; with her lower left hand holding a book and her upper right hand dispelling the fears of sadhakas; in her two right hands holding a rosary and bestowing boons; She herself being of the dazzling whiteness of snow, milk or the Moon; gracious and charming.
Armour of Shri Bala Tripurasundari
Shri Bhairavi said - Devadeva, Mahadeva, expander of devotees who please You, the Armour of Devi is hidden. Speak of this to Me!
Shri Bhairava -- Listen Devi, I speak of the Armour difficult to get even for gods. One should never reveal this high secret, which gives the wished for siddhi to a sadhaka. The Seer of the Armour is Dakshinamurti. Pankti is the Metre. The Devi is Tripurasundari. Its application in puja is the four aims of Mankind. She wears a pearl diadem, coiled earrings, armlets, a necklace of gems; pearl finger rings; effulgent bracelets and other jewels; a golden hip girdle, glittering anklets; her navel is adorned with a ruby, and she has a bracelet of shells, with a Kala of the Moon on her forehead. She holds a noose, a goad, a book and a rosary in her upper hands and the other hands.
May the Vagbhava Aim protect my head, and the Kamaraja Klim my heart! May the Shakti Bija Sauh protect me in my navel, genitals and feet!
May Aim Klim Sauh protect my face, and Bala shield me in my siddhi! May Ha Sa Ka La Hrim Sauh Bhairavi shield my throat, and may Sa Ka La Sundari shield me in the region of the navel!
May Mahatripurasundari shield my brow, and the point between my eyes! Subhaga protect my forehead! Bhaga shield my throat! Bhagodevi protect my heart! Bhagasarpini, shield my belly!
Bhagamala, shield my navel! Manobhava, protect my penis! May the auspicious Lady, the Queen of Queens, the Mahadevi, shield my anus!
Mother of the Cosmos (Jagad Ambika), form of Consciousness, protect my feet! Narayani, protect me at night! Shubhankari shield me in all my actions!
May Brahmani protect me in the East, and Vaishnavi in the South! May Varahi protect me in the West, and Maheshvari in the North! May Kaumari protect me in the South East, and Mahalakshmi in the South West! May Chamunda protect me in the North West, and Indrani in the North East!
Mahamaya, protect me in Water! Sarvamangala, shield me in Earth! Varada, protect me in Aether! Bhuvaneshvari, protect me everywhere!
This Armour is called "Names of the Goddess" and is hard to obtain! The pure person with concentrated mind should arise and recite it at dawn.
Whoever does it knows no fear or disease. Nor is he afraid of death or anxious about sin. He is never poor, nor is he vanquished by death. He dwells in the realm of Shiva, O Devi. I say to You that this is most certainly true.
O Auspicious One, whosoever should recite this Armour having not been initiated into Shri Vidya gains no fruit, but is struck by lightning.
The 1,000 Names of Bala
Shri Devi - Shri Natha Shankara, Bliss-Maker, speak! O Lord God, how may one obtain the yoga-power of full devotion, O Ocean of Wine 1 If You have compassion for Me Shambhu, reveal that which is well-hidden!
Shri Bhairava -- By devotion to Shakti one comes to know the entire vermilion ocean of Bliss, the hidden essence of Bala. Dear One, I will speak to You of Her 1,000 Names. Thus the celestial cause of Supreme Bliss has been declared, the Salt Vermilion Waves of Bala giving all satisfaction. O Parvati, of all sets of 1,000 names in the tantras, this is the quintessence.
Dearest, this hymn may be recited at all times, at night, and during puja in the morning. When Bala, the Giver of All Dominion and Happiness, is pleased, She bestows jewels of various kinds, wealth, and (answers all) requests. O Parameshvari, She bestows whatever desires a person has, and sons and daughters are born if one wishes it.
Enemies are destroyed, ailments are alleviated. If in a difficult situation, things are eased, medicines are bestowed on one. This bestows beautiful palaces, pictures, and all dominion. For a person, agriculture bestows rich harvests, and the heavenly cow seems to dwell for him on earth. His country prospers, and his state is not afflicted with calamities. Great elephants shower him with streams of nectar.
He dwells happily in palaces, surrounded by gems and horses. His offspring become rulers, free from strife, ministers of the king. Those known to him please him, he becomes noble and very beautiful, wealthy, always in a good position, alluring. Spoken speech and verse musically flow from him, like the Ganges in flood. He becomes able to expound the various meanings of various verses, becoming skilled in the entire essence of all, successful, his speech like gracious blossoms.
Shastras unknown to him are constantly revealed. Those with faults who would attack him become fearful, they sing adoringly of him, like slaves before a king. Swords and missiles hurt not his limbs. Women of all classes become completely subjugated by him. Poison becomes like wine-nectar for him. The host of opponents are paralysed, and his enemy crushed, if the knower of Yoga should continually practise for a period of nine nights.
If he should recite day and night, without idleness, he becomes peaceful of mind, and all created things in all the worlds become subject to him, there is no doubt of it.
If one should perform the yoga continually for six months, one becomes the (very essence of) Yogamaya, without question. Whosoever reads this ultimate hymn whilst meditating on Kamakala has women in a state of subjugation seeking him, intoxicated with sexual desire, beautiful, mad with lust, with beautiful enraptured eyes. He knows satiety of love through feminine desire, in this act of subjugation.
On a fortunate day, having written the yantra of Devi on birch-bark, colouring it with rochana, kumkum, lac, red dye, or sunflowers, making the womb of the yantra (=triangle) of gold or silver hue, very alluring, one should awaken Bala, having worshipped and established Her. If one should then carry this on one 's head, throat, shoulder, or near to one's heart or navel, one becomes wealthy, victorious, and gains love.
There is nothing greater than this in the three Worlds for protection, most certainly. Planets, diseases, and so forth, anxieties, are all banished, one gains happiness and health, it is the cause of strength and virility, and destroys cruel elements and enemies.
It gives sons, daughters, increases a host of qualities, gives wealth and grain. In whichever city this best of sadhaka dwells, whilst bearing Her, wealth is gained. In whichever dwelling this stotra is placed and written out, O Varanana, there I - Shiva, Hari and Kamala always dwell, and it is as if all the sacred waters spring from this place.
If the best of sadhakas should recite and read this devotedly he knows Knowledge, Bliss and Unity. O Deveshi, by reading this hymn, one gains the fruit of worship. One should recite it very carefully having established oneself in the six fold Nyasa. In the best of all tantras is the puja of Bala. There the 16 letters are the greatest thing. This, the best of all hymns, is found there.
O Sundari, one should never give this to those who are not pupils, the impure, fraudulent, indolent, who make no efforts, the undevoted, those deficient of Vishnu bhakti, the unstable or the stupid. It should be given to those who are devoted, as it is the cause of liberation, and augments devotion. O Varanana, whilst engaging in sexual intercourse (Latayoga), one may read the hymn. One becomes like the Aeon Creeper (Kalpalata), and the fruit of one's desires are achieved.
If a sadhaka should steadily recite this whilst in Latayoga, offering blossoms to the gazelle-eyed (partner), he is blessed with the results of 100 sacrifices (Yajna). O Deveshi, Brahma and the other (devatas) worship his feet, he himself becomes like Shiva -- that discriminating person who is attached to devotion to Bala. He becomes one with the Bliss of the Absolute, Jyotsna, in the state of Sadashiva.
Shri Bala Stotra
Shri Bhairava said - Parvati, now I speak of the Hymn of Devi Bala. Having heard the secret Panchanga, one should always conceal it.
(Dakshinamurti is the Rishi of this stotra-mantra of Shri Bala Tripurasundari; Pankti is the Metre; Shri Bala Tripurasundari is the Devata; Aim is the Bija; Sauh is the Shakti; Klim is the Kilaka; its application when reciting it is pleasing Shri Bala.
Hail to Dakshinamurti on the head Hail to the Metre Pankti on the mouth Hail to the Devata Shri Bala in the heart Hail to the Bija Aim on the navel Hail to the Shakti Sauh on the genitals Hail to the Linchpin Klim on the feet Hail to the Application when Reciting on all limbs
Aim to the heart obeisance Klim to the head Sauh to the peak Aim to the armour Klim to the eyes Sauh to the missile
Aim to the thumbs hail Klim to the index fingers Sauh to the middle fingers Aim to the ring fingers Klim to the little fingers Sauh to the front & back of the hands
(Meditation:)
Like the coloured red rays of the Sun shining brightly through red dust, the colour of the Japa rose, holding book, dispelling fear, and in Her other hands giving boons and holding a fully blossomed white water lotus. Thus one should establish in one's heart the eternally beautiful form Bala.
One should recite Aim, O Tripura Bhavani. One becomes greater than God or Guru, and has dominion and so forth of the partner of the Lord of the Mountains.
Within the course of one day, one should recite the King of Your Mantras known as the triple syllable Kamaraja, that of Kameshvari. The person initiated in Kula should worship the earthly and most beautiful and alluring courtesan.
One should recite Sauh, O Tripura, Mother of the three Worlds! You Who Manifest, Play, and bring all to Completion, the core of the Absolute (Brahmapada), Self-Existent! One should worship in the rectangle, the circles, the eight petalled lotus, within the city of the lotus of six petals, worshipping Bala in the Bindu Pitha, in order to become greater than Shiva.
Whosoever should recite this hymn of Tripura, which consists of mantra, at night or at dawn, becomes garlanded (praised) on earth, and in three days becomes equal to Shukra, Saura and Lakshmi.
Thus this stotra of Devi Bala, consisting of ultimate Mantra, is revealed. One should not give it to the undevoted, and should conceal it as if it were Your own yoni.

Hypnotism-Scientific studies

Scientific studies. The term hypnotism was used by James Braid, a British doctor who studied suggestion and hypnosis in the mid-1800's. Braid pointed out that hypnosis differed from sleep and that hypnotism was a physiological response in the subject, not the result of secret powers. Perhaps Braid's most valuable contribution was his attempt to define hypnotism as a phenomenon that could be scientifically studied. During this same period, James Esdaile, a Scottish doctor working in India, began to use hypnotism as an anaesthetic in major surgery, including leg amputations. He performed about 200 operations with the aid of hypnosis. During the late 1800's, the French neurologist Jean Martin Charcot performed landmark experiments involving hypnosis. He found that hypnosis relieved many nervous conditions. His clinic for nervous disorders achieved a widespread reputation among scientists of the time, including the French psychologist Alfred Binet and the Austrian doctor Sigmund Freud. Also in the late 1800's, the French doctors Hippolyte Bernheim and Ambroise Auguste Liebeault explored the role of suggestibility in hypnosis. These two scientists used hypnosis to treat more than 12,000 patients. Freud was especially interested in the work of Charcot and Bernheim. He used hypnotized people in his early studies of the unconscious state. For various reasons, Freud abandoned the use of hypnosis in his clinical practice. However, he continued to view hypnosis as an important research phenomenon. Late in his life, Freud modified his once negative views on hypnotism.

Tratak Dhayan

This dhyan is a very powerful method of clearing out mind clogs. Again it utilizes breath ; a change in the pattern of breathing. Simultaneously focusing is done by bringing all of your attention at one particular point. The object can be a idol, master’s picture, waterfall, river flow, tree, it can be anything of nature. But if it is a master’s picture or if possible the presence of the guru is more then perfect.

Four steps involved in this particular Meditation
Step 1: Begin with prayer ; get your mind and body ready for it. Be honest and sincere in doing the whole process. Seek blessings of god who is not a person but existence.
Step 2: Now start with fast breathing. Go for rapid inhaling and exhaling. Do it faster and faster as if it is your last breath ; or last moment to live the urgency to breathe. Put more stress on exhaling. Push it out with all your strength. If you feel like taking a pause o.k. but do not stop for a longer time. Best is to do it continuously
Now on command which will be after 20 minutes come back to normal breathing. Open your eyes and keep eyes focused on one point. Go for very deep inhalation and exhale it out. Constantly keep your eyes focused on one place. This goes on for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Now close your eyes, relax and listen to the music. Feel freeto express in any way you like to do.
Step 4: Here we end the Dhyan by bowing our head in the Lotus Feet of Dear Lord.

What is Hypnosis or Power of Suggestion?
We experience hypnosis daily, just never put a name to it. Have you ever driven from point A to point B and not remember how you got there? Your conscious mind simply turns off or gets distracted, while the subconscious continues to function normally. Hypnosis is a science - we simply developed a way to induce it through suggestion. The hypnotic state is natural phenomena and not a supernatural power.Your mind is like a mental Rolodex that stores your experiences, behavior and beliefs. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The best way to describe hypnosis is that there are two parts to your mind – conscious and sub-conscious. The subconscious mind acts as a guard that reasons and accepts the suggestions. It sorts through these suggestions, and decides if they should pass through or get rejected. The subconscious takes everything blindly and without question. A hypnotist temporarily confuses, distracts or occupies the conscious mind, so that the suggestions that sneak through are accepted without question or reasoning. In a stage presentation the hypnotist does NOT have ultimate control – the person simply gives them temporary control of their reality. That is why it is often stressed that a person would not do anything against their morals and beliefs.Your mind acts as a computer program that logically deciphers the root of action. Through hypnosis we can enter new information into this program and re-script your subconscious mind by replacing negative beliefs and way of thinking with a new set of positive and life-improving thoughts that propel you to achieve your goals and desires. When your internal beliefs change, you will transform to lead a positive existence. There is never surrender of mind or control. The hypnotized individual is fully aware of their actions.Hypnosis is a way of accessing your subconscious that contains your wisdom, intelligence, intuition, instincts and perception. It is your untapped resource for creativity and imagination. Your subconscious mind is the part of your brain responsible for all bodily functions and automatic behavior (blinking, breathing, blood circulation, healing, habits and learnt skills). The sub-conscious directs most of your behavior functions and is also the source of your emotions. Hypnosis is a safe way to issue new instructions to reprogram your mind and create changes in mind and body. Hypnosis is the doorway to your inner world, the realms of your imagination and dreams, which you can enter to improve your well-being and the quality of your life.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
In a show, some people were dismissed from the stage. Doesn’t everyone “go under”?
Most people are susceptible to hypnosis and power of suggestion, however in a stage presentation for the sake of the show, volunteers that prove to be the best subjects in the shortest time are selected to remain on stage and participate in the routines.
I want to know more about hypnosis.
Anyone can learn to hypnotize. But like anything else practitioners of any craft you need to study it at length. A great place to start is the library and the internet. Search engine is a good starting place.
Are the people hypnotized asleep?
The subject is normally not asleep, but extra aware, even though the word “sleep” is often used to equate the experience to a restful state. It stems from a Portuguese priest Abbe Faria who dramatically was the first to use the word to induce his subjects outside a monastery achieving a convincing and dramatic effect. The term hypnosis, however, originates from the Greek word "Hypnos", meaning sleep.
Why do hypnotists use a spiral or a pendulum?
It is simply a way to direct attention on one point. It is often not necessary, just used to simplify the procedure for their subject going under the spell of a crafty wordsmith.

Points of Interest and Terms

Hypnosis which includes relaxation through the use of suggestion. It is a guided approach with the help of another person, where the subject reacts to external wording or stimuli. All Hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis, which typically involves an introduction to the procedure during which the subject is told that suggestions for imaginative experiences will be presented. The hypnotic induction is an extended initial suggestion to trigger one’s imagination and lead them to explore their mind on the sub-conscious level. When using hypnosis, one person (the subject) is guided by another (the hypnotist) to respond to suggestions for changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior. Hypnosis is sometimes referred to as Power of Suggestion.
Self Hypnosis suggestions are provided mentally and silently or on a recording, eliminating the external guide (the subject autosuggests to himself or herself, instead of an outside source). It is the act of administering hypnotic procedures to yourself.
Alert hypnosis (there is no relaxation component)
Stage hypnosis is a theatrical presentation that delivers a hilarious series of silly events achieved through compliance. It is an educational presentation for entertainment purposes, achieved by quick dramatic response to suggestions.
Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP is partially derived from careful observation of the patterns in what happens during hypnosis. It is in part an extension of the communications analysis view of hypnosis. NLP borrows its basic concepts largely from cognitive psychology, which views behavior as guided by schemata or strategies. NLP practitioners use a variety of methods to determine strategies for various activities, and then modify them or utilize them for other purposes. Some of the techniques used in NLP also resemble "alert hypnosis," using language patterns similar to a hypnotic induction to elicit cooperation, build trust, and increase the effectiveness of suggestions. An example of that would be a very effective salesman or negotiator.
An Induction is a series of instructions that is the most common way to induce the state. Inductions traditionally involve suggestions to relax, concentrating attention on the world within us, rather than the world outside. Any situation where we relax and allow ourselves to become absorbed in something can lead to the appropriate trance conditions. These conditions also sometimes occur without relaxation. Most hypnotic inductions involve a cooperative process, rather than a hypnotist having the power to “zap” someone into a trance.

What is hypnosis?Hypnosis is a method by which any person may be guided into an altered state of conscious awareness ('hypnotic trance') in which psychological and physical changes, beyond normal conscious capability, may be achieved.

• Anyone can be hypnotised, if you can relax and follow instructions you can enter hypnosis.
• Measurable psychological and phyiological changes occur in hypnosis.
What does it feel like? The experience is different for different people. For most people, however, hypnosis is a pleasant state of deep inner calm and physical relaxation. Deep hypnosis is similar in many ways to the kind of profound trance found in expert yoga or meditation practitioners.
Where does it come from?Modern psychological hypnosis was first developed in 1843 by the Scottish physician James Braid. However, it has its origins in an earlier form of trance healing called 'Mesmerism', after the famous Eighteenth century Austrian Franz Anton Mesmer.
What is hypnotherapy?Hypnotherapy is basically any therapy done in conjunction with hypnotic trance. It is often classed as a form of complementary medicine but is perhaps better viewed as a branch of psychotherapy.

Hypnosis is not an occult or esoteric art, it is a scientifically acknowledged psychological and therapeutic discipline.
When a registered psychotherapist employs hypnosis alongside other forms of psychotherapy this is technically known as ‘hypno-psychotherapy’. Hypnotherapists tend to use an integrative approach which may combine programmes of direct verbal suggestion or visualisation with ‘analytic’ psychotherapy techniques such as age regression.
Does it work?Yes. Hypnosis has fascinated psychologists and medical professionals for over a century and has been subject to a great deal of rigorous testing and research. It also has an enviable and long-standing reputation for effectiveness among the general public.
Is it officially recognised?• ‘Hypnotism’ is legally acknowledged and defined by the Hypnotism Act 1952, in the UK Book of Statutes.
• In their 1892 Hypnotism Report, the British Medical Association (BMA) officially recognise the hypnotic trance: ‘The Committee, having completed such investigation of hypnotism as time permitted, have to report that they have satisfied themselves of the genuineness of the hypnotic state.’ The Committee also acknowledged that ‘as a therapeutic agent hypnotism is frequently effective in relieving pain, procuring sleep, and alleviating many functional ailments’ (BMA, 1892).
• In 1955 a follow-up report was commissioned which endorsed the findings of the original 1892 Committee, and added the conclusions that ‘hypnotism is of value and may be the treatment of choice in some cases of so-called psycho-somatic disorder and psychoneurosis. It may also be of value for revealing unrecognised motives and conflicts in such conditions. As a treatment, in the opinion of the Subcommittee it has proved its ability to remove symptoms and to alter morbid habits of thought and behaviour. […] In addition to the treatment of psychiatric disabilities, there is a place for hypnotism in the production of anaesthesia or analgesia for surgical and dental operations, and in suitable subjects it is an effective method of relieving pain in childbirth without altering the normal course of labour.’ (BMA, 1955)
Is hypnotherapy like stage hypnosis?Stage hypnosis is slightly different from hypnotherapy, however it is real hypnosis and the effects produced are possible for everyone to experience. Some stage hypnotists do good work but others generate misconceptions about the nature of hypnotic trance, which may lead to unfounded fears about hypnosis. In clinical hypnotherapy clients are never asked to do anything embarrassing or against their will.
Is hypnosis safe?Absolutely. There are no known records of anyone having been physically or mentally harmed as a direct result of hypnosis itself.
• It is utterly impossible for anyone to get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis.
What can hypnotherapy be used for? Some of the main benefits of hypnotherapy can be classed as follows (there are many more):
Stopping HabitsStop smoking cigarettes.Stop drinking alcohol.Overcome drug dependency.Lose (or gain) weight, enjoy a healthier diet.Get rid of, and/or obtain insight into, other habits.

What is hypnotism?
First, it is important to understand that hypnosis is a separate, altered state of consciousness. You arenot asleep. You are not awake. You are in a "trance" for lack of a better word. A trance is a state of mindin which a hypnotized client is able to free his or her mind from the constraints of their five senses andpreconceptions. The client experiences his or her simple, core consciousness. Typically the sensationis described as relaxing, blissful, dreamy or "I just felt different". Hypnotism is the process of inducinga hypnotic trance.
What is hypnotherapy?
A defining aspect of hypnosis is an increase in the client's suggestibility, ability to concentrate and anoften astounding memory improvement. Hypnotherapy makes use of these qualities to help a client literallychange his or her mind removing limiting or unproductive beliefs and thinking/behavioral patterns. Thesenew ways of thinking then become the client's foundation for thought and behavior. This allows for virtually limitless change.
Does the client remain in control?
The short answer is YES. Actually, you will gain control by easily making the changes that you want withthe aide of hypnotherapy. Also, it is a well documented fact that people cannot be made to perform actsunder the influence of hypnosis that are contrary to their personal values. This means that a hypnotherapistcannot make you violate your moral/ethical code.
Who can be hypnotized?
Just about anyone. The requirements to achieve the hypnotic state are a comfortable, quiet room and chairand a person of average intelligence who is not impaired from drugs or alcohol and is willing to become hypnotized. The only question is the ease with which you will achieve an effective state of hypnosis. That's something wewill work on together. Hypnotheapy is not a contest of wills. Rather it is a cooperative endeavor in whichthe hypnotherapist is a knowledgeable guide, nothing more.
Does hypnosis really work?
The short answer is YES. Successes achieved through hypnosis can be startling. It may very well help you makethe change you want on the very first session. We suggest multiple sessions for most issues to assure that youenter a deep, fully effective state of hypnosis and to reinforce the suggestions and to modify treatment accordingto what your day-to-day experience is between sessions
How much will my hypnotherapy treatment cost?
The value of hypnosis in a person's life can be priceless. Also, the number of sessions required for a dramatic, lasting change is dependent on the problem to be addressed and the client's aptitude for hypnosis. None the less, people need some guideline before committing themselves. I understand this so I offer a complete, detailedfee description. You will find it by clicking your cursor on:
Hypnosis is Affordable Therapy.
Can I handle more than one issue in a hypnosis session or group of sessions?
As a general rule, it is wisest to deal with one issue at a time. However, many behavior changes also requiresupport for secondary issues that must be addressed for the primary treatment to be successful. Self-esteemis often a part of weight loss treatment. Cigarette smoking cessation requires appetite and weight control to eliminate(or even reverse) the weight gain that ex-smokers typically report.
My wife, husband, sister, brother, doctor, son, daughter, etc. wants me to stop smoking or lose weight, Will hypnosis make me want to do what they want?
This is an example of how hypnotherapy cannot make you violate your fundamental values or go against yourdeepest desires. If you want to make a change hypnosis will help you accomplish it even if you don't think you can.Put another way, all you must bring to the first session is willingness power. Hypnotherapy will do the rest. No onehas a right to impose their will on you while in trance state. What's more you'll be glad to know it cannot be done.
How about cigarette smoking?
One day, 3-hour group hypnosis programs often promise you will quit after one session. Sometimes these work just fine. Usually they do not and people are tempted to think that hypnosis isn't really effective against tobacco addiction. This is not true. Hypnosis is an effective way to quite smoking, either alone or in conjunction with other support techniques.Unfortunately, many people who could achieve excellent results are discouraged from using individual, one-on-onehypnosis over several sessions as a reaction to unsatisfactory experiences in a group context.
I believe the people who do not achieve results in these sessions either were not truly hypnotized and got lost inthe group or had specific reservations about quitting which could not be addressed in a group setting.
There is also a third category of person who has trouble achieving success with group sessions. These are peoplewho didn't really want to quit in the first place. Their husband, wife, doctor, or someone else sent them, maybe evenpaid for their admission ticket. People in this category use their participation in the group as a "smoke screen"in their efforts to keep smoking while placating the anti-smoking advocates in their life. It can be a very handy gesture to be able to say "See, I even went to a hypnotist. Nothing works. I guessI'm just one of those people who can't kick it."
However, quitting smoking through hypnosis does work. It also doesn't require what people normally think of as willpower;but it does require "willingness power." The client must want to want to live life without tobacco and be willing to allow hypnosis to make it possible, if not easy.
I do not require that you stop smoking at or before your first office visit. Though it is naturally preferable that you do.Several days between Session One and Session Two gives you a second chance if you weren't ready. It also lets youdeepen your identity as a non-smoker after you have freed yourself from nicotine. By the way, if for any reason youreturn to smoking, you will be entitled to an additional session without cost. In other words, you can count on beingsuccessful. All you have to do is pick up the phone and make your first appointment.
What about weight loss?
It is relatively easy to hypnotize someone to stop smoking once they have decided that they want to. It is like turninga light switch off. When it is off, it is off. There is no question. The person is a non-smoker. But with weight control andso many other issues, we are working in grey areas. It is hardly practical to stop eating entirely. There are many variables.Time of day. Types of food. Special events. How much is too much issues. And so on. However, I have developed a unique hypnotic approach which is delivering literally amazing results. Multiple sessions and audiotapes of sessions are addedinsurance. They allow me to tailor the program to your specific issues for lasting, lifetime results.
What is hypnosis?Hypnosis is simply a focused state of mind. A person in hypnosis experiences a deep state of mental and physical relaxation. Will I lose control?Absolutely not! You will hear everything the hypnotist says and all sounds in the room. If there were a fire in the room you would stand up and walk out just like someone who wasn't hypnotized. The hypnotist can not force you to do something criminal or contrary to your moral judgment. Can everyone be hypnotized?Yes! All it takes is the desire to be hypnotized and your willingness to cooperate with the hypnotist. You can't be hypnotized against your will. If you come up on stage to prove that the hypnotist can't hypnotize you - you will win. You would be wasting your time and also taking the opportunity from someone who really did want to experience a deep relaxation. What if I don't wake up?It's never happened and it never will! The hypnotist will hypnotize you with the sound of his voice and he will bring you out the same way. A few minutes without the sound of the hypnotist voice and you would be fully awake or you would move into a natural sleep and wake in a few minutes. Can hypnosis be used for things other than entertainment?Yes! Many people have successfully stopped smoking, lost weight or reduced the effect of stress in their life. Hypnosis can be used for many theraputic purposes. Contact your local hypnotherapist for additional information. You can usually locate one in the Yellow Pages. Is hypnosis safe?Yes. Remember hypnosis is just a state of relaxation. There is no medical evidence that hypnosis will cause physical or psychological harm. Most people go in and out of hypnosis every day of week. A common example is driving right past your exit on the highway while your mind is occupied on something else. How does a show work? The hypnotist will give a brief introduction and then invite volunteers up on stage. The hypnotist will complete an induction to place the volunteers into hypnosis. And that's when the fun starts! The hypnotist will then give suggestions to the volunteers and the volunteers will perform various skits to the delight of the audience. What happens if one of the volunteers doesn't go into hypnosis? No big deal! It doesn't mean that the person can't be hypnotized. It simply means that on that particular occasion they were not able to concentrate to the necessary. It means that that for that particular show they would have a better time in the audience than up on stage.
Hypnosis FAQ's

Hypnosis FAQ's
"What is hypnosis?"
Hypnosis is a way of using naturally altered states of consciousness in order to communicate directly with the subconscious mind. Clinical hypnotism or hypno-counseling uses relaxation, suggestion and imagery in order to accelerate the process of self-improvement. Hypnosis allows us to more readily change the way we perceive our selves and the world around us. Quite often by developing a different set of perceptions, change becomes that much easier. The person who wants to quit smoking for example, will be that much more likely to succeed if he or she views the cigarette habit as an unacceptable behavior over which the individual has a large measure of control. In contrast, if you hold onto the idea that you are powerless over the nicotine craving, quitting will become much more difficult (if not impossible).

"How effective is hypnosis counseling?"
A survey of psychotherapy literature by noted psychologist Alfred A. Barrios, Ph.D. revealed the following recovery rates:Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions.Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions.Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions.Source: American Health MagazineIn my practice I use a formula that helps a prospective client determine if hypnosis is right for them, dubbed "P.W.B."P = Possible, is the goal something that can attained with the proper plan and motivation? Generally the answer is yes. Many other people just like you have people quit smoking, reduced excess weight or have become calmer and more confident- in fact it happens all the time. W= Do you WANT the outcome? Quite often an individual will state that they "should" or "need" to quit smoking or "have to" lose weight. If this is the case there is usually a lack of motivation and success is less likely. However, when we have a strong "want" we can become like an unstoppable force of nature when this is coupled with strong belief.B= Belief, we may have the ability and the want, but if the belief is not there, often self-sabotage kicks in. We are all familiar with the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy, where the belief system keeps us within certain boundaries. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis can help you extend past previous limits and to start living a healthier and happier life (as long as the goal is possible and truly wanted).

"Does a person become unconscious or lose control during hypnosis?"
Actually the opposite is true as you are gaining control over mental functions most other people are scarcely aware of. Contrary to popular myth, you will never tell secrets you want to keep to yourself or accept suggestions that are not in your best interests. Also you will be awake the entire session and will be able to recall all that took place. YOU are ALWAYS in CONTROL!

"What does being hypnotized feel like?"
Most clients report pleasant feelings of mental and physical relaxation, similar to those moments before we fall asleep at night. Relaxed, yet still aware and able to respond if we need to.

"Can anyone be hypnotized?"
Anyone who can follow simple instructions can work with hypnosis if they want to. The better informed a client is as to the truth and fictions regarding hypnosis, the better the results. It is true that some people find it easier to access a deeper level of hypnosis than others. However, the deepest levels of therapeutic trance are only necessary for drugless pain control or childbirth. A light to medium level of hypnosis is more than adequate for most situations. After all, chances are that you were not in deep hypnosis when the problem started! If you are curious as to what type of hypnotic talent you have, take the "Can YOU Be HYPNOTIZED?" quiz which you can access at this web site.

"What is the difference between hypnosis counseling and psychotherapy?"
Hypnosis counseling uses trance, suggestion and instruction in self-hypnosis to adjust and correct unwanted habits of thought, feeling and behavior (this is what Dr. Jim practices). Psychotherapy is the diagnosis and conversational treatment of mental disease. In other words, a psychotherapist treats people who have been diagnosed with some type of mental illness while a hypno-counselor or clinical hypnotist addresses the habits of normal people wishing to improve their lives. The term "hypnotherapy", according to New Jersey regulations, is reserved for psychotherapists who integrate hypnotic techniques into the work they do with people who have emotional and mental disorders. Quite often this can decrease the time a person needs to spend in therapy. When selecting a hypnotist, you should inquire as to his or her training and avoid those persons who are not comfortable discussing that with you. Since hypnotism is not regulated in most states, one thing you can look for is training and certification via one of the more reputable hypnosis organizations. Some of the better established groups include the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association (IMDHA) and the International Association of Counselors and Therapists (IACT). Certification through these organizations signifies certain training standards have been met along with continuing education requirements for annual membership renewal.

"What about those group hypnosis programs for smoking and weight control that I see advertised in the paper, are they effective?"
Clinical research shows that hypnosis is far more effective in the private session or small group format. First, someone running a large program cannot give individualized attention to each person there. Second, many people find it hard to relax in a room with 100-300 strangers, especially if it is your first time working with hypnosis. Third, many problems require follow-up visits, which the traveling programs cannot provide. I personally have nothing against these programs, some of them provide useful information about smoking cessation or weight control and occasionally the presenters are good motivational speakers. However you are far more likely to reach your goal by working with a qualified practitioner privately or in a small group over a period of several weeks. The added investment is certainly worth it.

How can I tell which hypnotist is right for me?
You should inquire as to the person's training and qualifications, with certification through one of the major organizations being a big plus. If you are seeking assistance with a mental disorder, make sure that the practitioner is licensed to work with such conditions. Most ethical hypnotists are willing to give a free initial consultation, on the phone or in person, to help you make an informed decision. Pressured sales tactics to pay a large fee upfront or to buy additional products are usually a warning sign that you would be better off going elsewhere.

"How many sessions will be needed?"
This depends on the nature of the goal or problem. On average 4 visits are needed for most cases with the exception of smoking cessation, which normally takes only 1 or 2. The range of sessions can be anywhere from 2-8, which is far shorter than many other types of assistance. By accessing the subconscious mind, the process of personal transformation is accelerated via hypno-counseling.
Q: What is hypnosis?
A: Experts have been trying to define hypnosis for years, with little agreement between them! The best way I can answer, for the time being at least, is this: Hypnosis is a natural and often spontaneously occurring state of consciousness in which the conscious mind, the part of our mind that judges, evaluates, and analyzes is "put to the side" so that our subconscious mind predominates. When someone is in a hypnotic state of mind they are open to accepting ideas, concepts and suggestions that they may integrate into their belief system. This can effect a change in feeling about an issue, in addition to changing behavior relating to that issue. Many believe that it is the ability to change feelings, more than behaviors, that makes hypnosis so powerful.
Q: When I am in hypnosis can someone control my mind, cause me to do things I wouldn't ordinarily do?
A: Mind control is a popular myth surrounding hypnosis that many of us in the hypnotherapy field are working hard to dispel. It is NOT true that someone can control your mind while you are in hypnosis. In fact, many hypnosis experts like to say that rather than lose control, you gain control while in hypnosis. This assertion is based on the fact that our conscious mind constitutes a measly 10% of our mind, whereas our subconscious mind rules the remaining 90% of us! Even though it is said the subconscious mind is open to suggestion and doesn't judge or discriminate against suggestions, it has been demonstrated time and again that people will not behave contrary to their moral/ethical beliefs, they will not violate their core standard of behavior. What confuses some people is how individuals will behave during a stage hypnotism show; ordinarily shy, quiet folks will often bark like dogs, sing like Elvis, do the hula or a myriad of other silly things in front of sometimes hundreds of strangers! This observation seems to contradict the statement of non-violation of personal behavior codes; but there is a reasonable explanation. Often, when people you least expect to do so, exhibit flamboyant behavior under hypnosis, we are seeing another aspect of that person. Just because some people seem shy and quiet doesn't mean they are destined to always be that way! All it may take is the opportunity for the conscious, rational mind to step aside, for another facet of that person to emerge! This is a very simplified explanation of the dynamics that can occur with some individuals, but, suffice it to say that, with 90% of your mind in the driver's seat when you're in hypnosis, someone else has little hope of controlling you!!!
Q: What are post-hypnotic suggestions and how long will they last after being given while in hypnosis?
A: Post-hypnotic suggestions are those ideas offered to a person in hypnosis to "take with them" into their conscious life. The suggestions often deal with behaviors or beliefs the person wishes to change, such as to stop smoking, develop a better sense of self etc etc. How long the suggestions last is extremely variable and dependent on a number of things. Duration of a post-hypnotic suggestion is probably influenced most by how well the suggestion was accepted by the subconscious mind during hypnosis. Acceptance, in turn, is affected by a number of conditions/variables, such as resistance, deeper-seated issues affecting the situation being dealt with, sometimes depth of hypnotic trance and perhaps rapport between subject and hypnotist. It is probably safest to say that many issues of long-lasting duration, deep emotional impact and importance or around which there is a great deal of resistance to change, will need periodic, perhaps frequent (for a certain period of time) reinforcement of acceptance until the subconscious mind can truly integrate the new thought, feeling, emotion and/or behavior in a comfortable, natural way.
Q: Can anyone be hypnotized?
A: It is felt that virtually everyone is able to go into a hypnotic trance to some degree or another. In fact, certain researchers believe that people go in and out of hypnosis spontaneously several times a day! How receptive the person (subject) is to being hypnotized by someone else, can be the determining factor of whether or not they go into trance . The more open a subject is to relaxing and going into hypnosis, the more successful they usually are. Because many people don't understand what hypnosis is, what it can feel like, or how it may be experienced, they will believe they didn't "go under" during a hypnosis session, when, in fact, they were hypnotized. It is not true that a person has to be completely "out" to have been in hypnosis. Many people achieve a very powerful level of trance (in terms of being receptive to suggestion) and are able to hear and remember every word the hypnotherapist says. Perhaps it's helpful to say that, like many other phenomena in the world, we experience hypnosis in our own, personal way; there is no right or wrong, good or bad--our way is just our way!
Interestingly, many hypnosis experts believe that children are in hypnosis most of the time! Because children play "make believe" so much of their day, they are in a nearly constant state of "suspended disbelief", which, in effect, is what we do in hypnosis! This may also be why children are so able to be influenced by their environment! What is around them day in and day out is being fed to their subconscious minds as they "pretend", thus explaining why childhood-acquired beliefs, philosophies, attitudes and perceptions are so deeply embedded and often so hard to dispel! There is much food for thought, research and intervention here!
Some of the earliest observations about, and research on hypnosis involved animals! Behavior exhibited by animals under certain conditions (such as extreme danger, during the hunt etc) led researchers to believe that hypnosis may be a very basic, primitive survival technique utilized by humans and lower animals in times of need. So, even "Fluffy and Fido" go in and out of trance periodically throughout their day!

QUESTIONS (and responses):

1. What IS hypnosis?
Opinions vary on the exact definition of this natural state of mind. First of all, contrary to what is commonly believed by many, hypnosis is NOT a "sleep" state even though a person in hypnosis may appear to be sleeping. I prefer the way my late mentor, Charles Tebbetts, defined hypnosis, so let me quote his exact words as written in MIRACLES ON DEMAND (which is, unfortunately, no longer in print): "There is no legal definition of hypnosis. Webster's dictionary describes it incorrectly as an artificially induced sleep, but it is actually a natural state of mind and induced normally in everyday living much more often than it is induced artificially. Every time we become engrossed in a novel or a motion picture, we are in a natural hypnotic trance (p. 211-212)."
I totally agree with the theory Charles Tebbetts taught: ALL HYPNOSIS IS SELF-HYPNOSIS, AND THE POWER IS IN THE MIND OF THE PERSON BEING HYPNOTIZED. So, in reality, the Hypnotherapist is more like a guide who facilitates the hypnotic process. Myron Teitelbaum, M.D., author of HYPNOSIS INDUCTION TECHNIQUES, came to the same conclusion--as is evidenced by what he wrote in the last two pages of Chapter 3: "The hypnotist is merely the guide who directs and leads the subject into the trance (page 18)."
Additionally, the common belief evidenced by research is that a person experiencing hypnosis slows down his or her brain waves from BETA into ALPHA--although some people believe that we may actually enter THETA during deep trance states. (THETA is normally the "dream" state we pass through on the way to and from DELTA--or deep sleep.) Be aware that since we must all pass through ALPHA on the way to and from sleep, we could easily say that all of us experience hypnosis at least twice daily. But in working with clients, I keep the explanation as simple as possible.
To me, the most accurate way of defining hypnosis is to simply call it "guided meditation." Since many of us enter a meditative or "trance" state while listening to music, watching TV, listening to a good speaker or a good sermon at church, or even while reading, you could say that the hypnotist does not even have to be a live person. So if hypnosis were ever outlawed, it would be virtually impossible to enforce, because we would have to stop the freedom of speech and freedom of press!
On the other hand, if all hypnosis is--as Charles Tebbetts firmly believed--really Guided self-hypnosis, then that truly makes the hypnotist an artist! This is why I chose THE ART OF HYPNOSIS as the title for the first volume of my major work based on the teachings of my late mentor.

2. Does a hypnotized person give up control?
Do we give up control of our minds during a movie? When is the last time you got so involved during a movie or TV show that you actually felt emotion? You were literally in a hypnotic trance, although you still have the power to emerge from that state if desired. Your mind may be guided by a movie, TV show, self-hypnosis tape, or Hypnotherapist, but YOU still have the power to resist. Even though there are some people who seem to at least partially give up control of their minds, that is because of misunderstanding who has the power. Certainly one can be TRICKED into believing that he/she has "given up control" in some forms of stage hypnosis or other experiments--but does that make it right? I am part of the NEW ETHICS of hypnotherapy, perpetuating what my mentor taught me to disclose: "ALL HYPNOSIS IS SELF-HYPNOSIS." Once people really understand this fact, they may enter deep states of hypnosis while still retaining the power to resist unwanted suggestions.
I proved this myself several years ago during a profoundly deep trance when the hypnotist suggested that I shave my beard. I brought myself right out of hypnosis and gave her a lecture on ethics that hopefully she will always remember.
Let's start informing people where the real power is--within THEIR OWN MINDS! And we can begin by no longer referring to people in hypnosis as "subjects." My own students are asked to use the following definitions for people in hypnosis:
CLIENTS = People hypnotized for self-improvement, etc.
PARTICIPANTS = People hypnotized for practice, demonstration, stage hypnosis, etc.
PATIENTS = People hypnotized for medical applications of hypnosis.
SUBJECTS = Those who are the subjects of someone experimenting with hypnosis (whether for scientific research, or parlor games done by untrained hypnotists). Please AVOID using this word to refer to clients or patients experiencing hypnosis for a beneficial purpose! In my opinion, the very fact that the scientific community has used the word "subject" for so many decades is part of the reason why people still fear hypnosis today. This very word implies giving up control... and while there are those who wish to still use "disempowerment" hypnotic methods by tricking people into giving up control, I believe it's time to teach the truth about where the power is!

3. How does hypnosis feel?
Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind, clients are often surprised that they hear every word. Unless one enters a deeper state, or at least a medium state, he or she may not "feel" any different than when relaxing in the favorite easy chair with a good book. One may feel quite mellow, and may feel light (or weightless), or very heavy as if sinking into the chair. If one enters a really deep state, the feeling may be euphoric for some, or almost like being intoxicated without the side effects. In a light state, it is entirely possible for a client to believe that he or she was not hypnotized; so it is important for a Hypnotherapist to know how to competently handle the pre-induction discussion as well as the discussion after hypnosis.
There are certain abilities which are enhanced during the actual hypnotic process itself: (a) the ability to IMAGINE, (b) the ability to REMEMBER, (c) the CREATIVE abilities, and (d) RESPONSIVENESS TO SUGGESTIONS. Naturally, it is this last ability which creates the appeal of hypnosis to some and the fear of hypnosis to others. And before you go experimenting with hypnosis, be advised to seek competent "hands-on" training--or at the very least, invest in a quality Home Study course! Simply reading is not enough if you plan on facilitating hypnosis.

4. How do we induce hypnosis?
My late mentor believed that virtually all techniques of hypnotic induction could be categorized into six main induction categories, which he called INDUCTION TYPES. Once understood, a competent hypnotist can use them as building blocks for creating almost limitless induction techniques. They are summarized below:
a. Eye fixation (or "fixed gaze" methods) were primarily used during the 1800's, and are the ones usually used by Hollywood. Many people (including myself) do not respond to eye fixation inductions; thus, people who might respond quite well to other induction types could easily be mislabeled as "insusceptible" by a hypnotist employing only this type of induction. Several of my clients who have successfully responded to other induction types were erroneously told by an M.D. or psychologist that they could not be hypnotized after failing to respond to a fixed gaze induction.
b. Progressive relaxation (and imagery) methods are frequently used on self-hypnosis tapes, as well as by some who facilitate meditation. Facilitators often use a relaxation induction (or guided imagery) to have someone imagine being in a safe or peaceful place, and then awaken to full consciousness. Often those who actually use hypnosis inductions of this type will deny their use of hypnosis--and some facilitators of such meditations have even told me that they don't believe in hypnosis! A trance is a trance -- is a trance -- is a trance -- and is a form of hypnosis -- regardless of what name it is called.
c. Mental confusion methods are designed to confuse the conscious mind, so that it simply becomes easier to just relax and "let go" into hypnosis. Do not attempt this type of induction until you understand it, and know what to do when a client enters hypnosis.
d. Mental misdirection methods employ active use of the imagination, coupled with response, to hypnotize through responding to suggestions.
e. Loss of equilibrium: most of us seem to have an inherited desire to be gently rocked, as is evidenced by the millions of rocking chairs available. How many mothers "hypnotize" their babies to sleep by rocking them at night?
f. Shock to nervous system: the paternal "rapid" inductions frequently used by stage hypnotists are examples of this induction type, employing a sudden emphatic command given in a surprising manner. The participant or client will experience a "moment of passivity" during which he or she will either resist the trance, or "let go" and drop quickly into hypnosis. Although I very rarely use this induction type, there seems to be a time and place for it once in a while.
When you understand these induction types, you may combine two or more as "building blocks" for techniques which are as limitless as your imagination. For more detailed explanations of these basic induction types, as well as sample techniques, order my book THE ART OF HYPNOSIS from The National Guild of Hypnotists by calling 1-(603) 429-9438. It is the first volume of a 500-page major work based on the teachings of Charles Tebbetts. The second volume, THE ART OF HYPNOTHERAPY, may be ordered from Kendall/Hunt Publishing at 1-(800) 228-0810.

5. How may I learn self-hypnosis?
The best way to learn self-hypnosis is by asking a qualified Hypnotherapist to teach you, and to give you post-hypnotic suggestions to reinforce what you learn. Additionally, you may find it helpful to read a good book on the subject. The one I like best is: SELF-HYPNOSIS AND OTHER MIND-EXPANDING TECHNIQUES by Charles Tebbetts (Westwood Publishing). A former member of British Parliament told me that, in his opinion, the above book was one of the two best books ever written on self-hypnosis. He also recommended my own self-hypnosis book to his students, which I've re-written and re-titled SELF-HYPNOSIS FOR EMPOWERMENT (originally published as "Success Through Mind Power" in 1987 by Westwood Publishing). It is available from me on-line for $7.00 (US$); e-mail me if interested.
Also, SELF-HYPNOTISM by Leslie LeCron is very good, as well as HYPNOTISM & MEDITATION by Ormond McGill (Westwood Publishing). I personally enjoyed CREATIVE VISUALIZATION by Shakti Gawain (Publisher: New World Library). Additionally, there are many good self-help books on visualization that are really recommending self-hypnosis techniques even when the author does not disclose that the techniques are forms of self-hypnosis.

6. What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for self-improvement and/or the release of problems. All hypnotherapy employs hypnosis; but not all hypnosis is hypnotherapy. Additionally, mastering the art of hypnosis does not necessarily mean one is qualified as a Hypnotherapist. Contrary to what many might believe, there is more to helping someone overcome an unwanted habit than simply giving hypnotic suggestions. If a person's subconscious resists positive suggestions for goal achievement, the competently trained Hypnotherapist is far more likely to be of service than those with minimal training in hypnosis, or who are simply self-taught. And a background in counseling is NOT a substitute for adequate training in hypnotherapy when hypnosis is used to help people.

7. What books and/or other sources can you recommend?
When I studied hypnosis back in 1983, Charles Tebbetts required all his students to read HYPNOTISM TODAY by LeCron & Bordeaux (Wilshire Book Co.). Although it was written almost a half-century ago, it stood for many years as the leading book recommended by my mentor, along with another book entitled HYPNOTHERAPY by Dave Elman (Westwood Publishing), which I strongly recommend that any serious student of hypnosis purchase and read, as well as John Hugh's HYPNOSIS: THE INDUCTION OF CONVICTION (available from the National Guild of Hypnotists).
My own two-volume major work based on the teachings of my late mentor is already resulting in many praises from my peers: THE ART OF HYPNOSIS (National Guild of Hypnotists) and THE ART OF HYPNOTHERAPY (Kendall/Hunt Publishing). You may order the latter by calling 1 (800) 228-0810.
An OUTSTANDING resource list was compiled by Paul Bunnell, which deserves to become a permanent part of this FAQ. It appears in "FAQ 4 of 4" after the answer to Question 15, along with a partial list I of other books highly recommended by my peers. To avoid duplication, my list (which previously appeared here) now appears in the RESOURCE GUIDE section of this FAQ, along with Paul Bunnell's list of books and other valuable resources.

8. How can I choose a competent hypnosis instructor?
Rather than simply telling you where to go, allow me to share my own views regarding instruction itself. My opinions expressed here are my own; this is NOT written in behalf of any hypnosis association. However, my response is from the point of reference of a combination of factors: my professional experience, my national involvement with several hypnosis associations and other leaders in the profession, my awareness that there are some who would like to control who can legally practice hypnosis, and that there are legitimate concerns raised about the inadequate training programs that are all too common.
Many 3-day to 5-day training programs provide "certification" representing that a participant is a qualified or certified "Hypnotherapist" who can work with almost any client walking through the door. I'll quote sections from pages 6-10 my own book, THE ART OF HYPNOTHERAPY:
"Charles Tebbetts said numerous times that there is no substitute for practice to develop confidence and competence with the art of hypnosis. In my opinion, this is even more true for those who wish to teach the art of hypnosis. [portions deleted]...how can you determine whether or not your prospective trainer is your wisest choice? First of all, ask your prospective hypnotherapy teacher whether or not he/she practices hypnotherapy on a full-time or part time basis, and for how many years. This is far more important than his or her academic credentials.
[snip]..."I would far rather see someone teaching basic hypnotherapy with five years' experience in the profession than an instructor with a doctorate degree who only occasionally uses hypnosis in his or her practice of medicine or psychology--except for medical and/or other specialized applications of hypnosis. " (I believe specialty courses should be taught by those who specialize in those applications of hypnosis.)
It is also my opinion that newly certified hypnotherapists who jump right into teaching hypnosis a few weeks after their certification course are jeopardizing the credibility of our profession. Pay your dues and get your experience first!
SECOND: Find out the length of the training. Is it a one-weekend certification course? If so, forget it unless it is a specialized application of hypnosis for those who are already using hypnotherapy professionally. There is increasing support from around the United States towards having a 100-hour minimum training requirement before one may be considered a "certified Hypnotherapist," even if said person has counseling experience.
THIRD: Find out whether or not the techniques taught are client-centered and the classes student-centered. Will you learn hypnotherapy techniques that you must use on every single client? There is no hypnotic technique I know of that will work on all of the people all of the time. Charles Tebbetts taught what I call diversified client-centered hypnosis.
Also, my teacher exclusively taught subject matter that was directly related to the art of hypnotherapy. He did not believe we needed hundreds of hours of classes on theories or on topics that have nothing to do with the practice of hypnotherapy.
Additionally, has your instructor been certified as a hypnotherapy instructor? Many hypnotherapy instructors are self-appointed! While some self-appointed instructors may be competent, others might be teaching courses that are not recognized by any of the major hypnosis associations.
Last but not least, find out whether the approach is self-empowerment or whether your instructor is treating people as "subjects" which he/she dominates during therapy.
Realize that because hypnosis is an art, there is probably no such thing as a perfect instructor. Be willing to learn from him or her; but make certain you are also willing to continue learning and grow beyond your instructor's viewpoints. DON'T EVER make the mistake of thinking your instructor is the only person qualified to be an authority in hypnotherapy. None of us has all the answers, and I do not recognize anyone as the "leading authority" in hypnosis. We are all still learning.
If the only program available near you is a short one, be willing to refer many of your clients to those who are adequately trained, and make a commitment to yourself to pursue additional training ASAP. And if you are taking your first hypnosis course, please don't let 3-day or one-week certification instructors dupe you into thinking that is sufficient training to qualify you to use regressions or other advanced techniques to deal with subconscious resistance to change! (The National Guild's Code of Ethics FORBIDS the use of hypnotic regression until you are trained in that area!) Don't get stung by the consequences of their failure to respond to the light of truth: there is NO SHORTCUT to learning hypnosis competently.

9. Which courses or instructors come highly recommended?
The answer to this question will vary based on who you ask. My earlier FAQ postings provided names and phone numbers of organizations which I can comfortably recommend; but due to incessant criticism and flames concerning organizations omitted or critiqued in past posts, I have chosen to delete giving specific recommendations in an informational posting. (NOTE: If you are seriously contemplating training, you may wish to refer to Paul Bunnell's RESOURCE GUIDE section at the end of FAQ 4 of 4.)
I recommend you interview your prospective instructor. Also, if you study from someone who teaches one primary modality, be careful to avoid the trap of believing that your instructor's techniques are the only ones that are valid. NO technique, no matter how effective, will work for all the people all the time. Be willing to fit the technique to the client rather than vice versa. This requires width and depth of training! And it is absolutely impossible to learn enough techniques to accomplish this in just one week--no matter what your academic credentials are.
If a one-week course or less is all that is initially available to you, please make a commitment to both yourself and your clients to continue your training as soon as you can afford to invest the time and money to do so, whether this is by investing in a home study course as a supplement, or by traveling to work with a competent trainer.
Hypnosis is an art. I hope your instructor teaches it as such.

10. If I have a natural gift, why should I seek training?
Some people seem gifted in the art of hypnosis right from the very first class, so it is possible that you could be good at non-therapeutic aspects of hypnosis. But if you EVER plan on using hypnosis in a therapeutic way to help people be motivated, or to overcome bad habits, etc., you run two risks if you fail to obtain "hands-on" training:
(a) First of all, and of vital importance, you run a risk of someone being left with a negative impression of hypnosis if he/she fails to respond to your attempts to help. Even the best of us cannot help all the people all the time. But the probability of helping a client is far greater if you have a good understanding of a variety of techniques and disciplines, so that you may fit the technique to the client rather than the other way around. Even if you understand the importance of suggestion structure, some people may have subconscious resistance to change. Frequently the failure is not theirs; but rather, that of an inadequately trained Hypnotherapist who tried to make the client fit his/her technique or style. Believe it or not, this sometimes happens with counselors or psychologists with little or no training in hypnotherapy who use hypnosis because it is legal for them to do so.
(b) Second, you will simply not have the respect of Hypnotherapists who have respected hypnosis enough to invest in their own training. If you ARE one of those who learned in only 3 to 5 days, do yourself a favor and seek additional training, even if through a home study course. This is important to both you and your clients.
Additionally, our legal survival as a profession is in danger because of the very fact that there are self-taught people using hypnosis therapeutically, as well as "certified" Hypnotherapists who only completed "certification" courses lasting a week or less. We as a profession simply must increase our own standards if we are to prevent the A.M.A. and A.P.A. from dictating who may or may not use hypnosis. Some with doctorate degrees have been ACTIVELY trying to legislate us out of legality in a number of states. We must start insisting that hypnotherapists seek adequate training before calling themselves "Certified Hypnotherapists," or we must create a new name for those trained in advanced techniques! If we do not do so, there is a risk that hypnosis could once again be controlled by an elite few.

11. What makes hypnotherapy different than cognitive therapy?
Cognitive counseling deals with issues at a cognitive level; and many of life's problems require just that. When someone has to make difficult cognitive decisions, competent professional help is absolutely essential! For example, hypnotherapy is not a substitute for marriage counseling. But when it comes to changing habits or behaviors regulated by the subconscious, there is nothing faster than competent hypnotherapy to facilitate subconscious change. However, hypnosis is NOT A PANACEA for all life's problems, and it should not be advertised as such.
It's also important to realize that a competent Hypnotherapist recognizes that he or she is NOT licensed to diagnose (unless trained and licensed to do so). While a physician, psychologist, or licensed mental health practitioner may be qualified to diagnose or "label" the cause of someone's problem, it is advisable for the Hypnotherapist to avoid doing so. Additionally, in my opinion, even when a licensed mental health practitioner uses hypnosis, it is VITALLY important to avoid projecting the preconceived opinion into the hypnotherapy session. If that opinion is incorrect, it may taint the trance--making it difficult to differentiate between repressed memories and false memories.
A diagnostician formulates a professional opinion on the cause of a problem. A competent Hypnotherapist asks the client's subconscious mind to disclose the cause, and then either proceeds or refers accordingly, based on the information disclosed.
Here's a good analogy: psychologists and mental health counselors could be compared to the "hardware" experts, whereas hypnotherapists are only trained to improve the software.

12. How can hypnosis be used to quit smoking or manage weight?
There are many roads leading from San Francisco to New York; likewise there are many ways to successfully help someone quit smoking. But the KEY is simple: THE CLIENT MUST CHOOSE TO CHANGE. If this is not so, long-term success is very unlikely.
I use a positive approach, based on the client identifying the benefits of change. Hypnosis is used to sell the benefits to the subconscious before any suggestions are given to quit smoking or reduce.
Some people use substitutes for old smoking triggers, and some do not. I recommend one deep breath, as it has no calories and no side effects. It is far better for the CONSCIOUS mind to choose the substitute than for the subconscious, as one addiction might be traded for another. Furthermore, if there is still pleasure associated with smoking, the client needs to make a conscious decision to choose another way of having some pleasure in a healthy manner, or there is greater risk of backsliding. Some hypnotherapists unnecessarily use regression back to the first smoke, based on the premise that the original cause must be removed. But with smoking, more recent causes usually far overshadow the original cause, which has often faded with time.
With weight reduction, I also start with the benefits approach. Often there is more work to be done, however, as people may overeat as an adjunctive response to another unresolved issue. Depending on the cause disclosed by the subconscious mind, I may or may not be qualified to help the client resolve the issue.
If there is subconscious resistance to the more positive approach for ANY type of goal, a client-centered approach would be to ask the subconscious to reveal what the cause is so that it may be released. (Without release from the cause, the problem may return.) And before you do this, you are well-advised to have received competent supervised training in such techniques!

13. Can hypnosis be used to reduce pain and/or suffering from illness?
Pain is a warning that something is wrong with the body, and it needs to be diagnosed by someone qualified to do so. Any competent hypnotherapy instructor emphasizes to his or her students the importance of requiring a written referral from an examining physician before ever using hypnosis to reduce pain or other physical symptoms. The exception (for those who are not licensed to practice medicine) is if the examining physician is physically present and/or is supervising the hypnotic process. Since the time of a Hypnotherapist is not nearly as expensive as the time of a physician, hopefully there will be greater cooperation between the medical profession and the hypnotherapy profession in the future. A competently trained Hypnotherapist should know, even with a medical referral, when to simply use hypnosis for symptom removal, and when and how to use hypnosis to search for subconscious causes of the symptom(s). Hypnosis can make a difference even with major disease! You might be interested in reading LOVE, MEDICINE & MIRACLES by Bernie S. Siegel, M.D. (Publisher: Harper & Row), and/or ANSWER CANCER by Steve Parkhill.

14. Is hypnosis dangerous?
According to my late mentor, hypnosis of and by itself is not dangerous. If it were, we would all be in jeopardy every time we get engrossed in a good book, movie, or TV show. But unwise use of suggestion may create the opposite of the desired results if the person using hypnosis does not understand the disciplines of suggestion structure. For example, a suggestion such as "You don't like candy" will cause someone to imagine candy, and imagination is the language of the subconscious!
What we say and how we say it creates images in the subconscious, which does not know the difference between fact and fantasy. (If you don't believe that last statement, hold your arms out in front of you and close your eyes. Then imagine a bucket in one hand and 100 helium balloons in the other. Imagine SEEING water pour into the bucket. HEAR it splashing, and FEEL the bucket getting heavy. After several seconds of deep breathing, open your eyes and notice where your arms are. Most people will notice a difference!) An untrained hypnotist often talks about the problems to be avoided; whereas most competent hypnotherapists focus on results -- whether they use direct or indirect suggestions, or both.
There are some areas of concern which I believe need to be addressed here:
a. AVERSION SUGGESTION: In my opinion, the gross aversion suggestion given in many group hypnosis seminars is very risky. If a person VIVIDLY IMAGINES major disease as a result of smoking, and convinces himself or herself that the disease will come if the smoking habit persists, then how can we be sure whether the negative subconscious belief had anything to do with creating the onset of the disease??? Suggestions must be kept POSITIVE, affirming the desired results. Yet there are books written by people with doctorate degrees which advocate the use of aversion suggestion when dealing with tobacco and other addictions.
One of my former clients, desperate to lose weight, bought a suggestion given by her psychiatrist to get sick whenever she tasted or desired pizza; and she did so twice weekly whenever her husband called for pizza delivery. After suffering for over a year, she saw me to have the aversion suggestion removed. I am 99% opposed to most uses of aversion suggestion, except very temporary and mild ones in rare cases when all other techniques are resisted.
b. REGRESSIONS AND FALSE MEMORIES: First of all, let's consider the fact that a COMPETENTLY trained Hypnotherapist might, in some cases, choose to hypnotize a client with a hypnotic regression being one of the objectives to achieving therapeutic results! This is perfectly acceptable if the Hypnotherapist is trained in the effective handling of client abreactions, understands the risk of false memories, AND is also working within his or her field of competency. But if you have not had "hands on" training in regression therapy, or if you do not understand the difference between "leading" and "guiding" questions or suggestions, you are advised to avoid causing hypnotic regressions. Because of the increased ability to fantasize, it is all to easy for a compliant client to fantasize a suggested sexual molestation that never took place!!! Some mental health professionals have found themselves on the wrong end of lawsuits because of this very problem. This is a glaring example of the dangers of projecting your own pre-conceived opinions into the trance state created by your clients; so until you know how to competently facilitate a hypnotic regression, DON'T -- even if you are an experienced counselor.
c. PAIN MANAGEMENT: Since pain is a warning that something is wrong with the body, the cause should be discovered by someone who is licensed to diagnose. See my comments for Question #13.
d. ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: No ethical Hypnotherapist would even consider trying to use hypnosis to induce criminal or anti-social behavior, nor trying to deceive someone into doing such. Furthermore, research seems to indicate that a person would not knowingly accept suggestions to break the law unless he/she is already inclined to do so.
e. FORENSIC HYPNOSIS: If you plan on using forensic hypnosis, perhaps you should read TRANCE ON TRIAL (Scheflin and Shapiro) and then decide whether you wish to seek additional training in that field first. And, unless you have a legal background or background in law enforcement, make certain that the training you receive is specialized and adequate. Even with all my years of experience in hypnotherapy, I still avoid the use of forensic hypnosis.
f. DEPENDENCE: The dependence issue should not be a concern with any client of a hypnotherapist who seeks to help a client become self-empowered. And client-centered techniques are designed to help clients use the power of their own minds to change, while the Hypnotherapist is simply the guide or facilitator of such change. And since I'm a firm believer in the benefits of self-hypnosis, perhaps you could say that I've become dependent on self-hypnosis because it works! Furthermore, I'll put myself on the receiving end of hypnotherapy whenever I require it. Self-hypnosis is like lifting a chair; but when I'm moving a piano in my subconscious, it's much easier with someone on the other end helping to lift.

15. Who is the leading authority on hypnosis?
This is a difficult question to answer. There are some who hold themselves up as such, but the longer I'm in this profession the more I realize there is to learn about the art of hypnosis.
Who is the leading authority on music? Music is an art. Would you consider Barbra Streisand the leading authority on music? Of course not... but she is a master artist! Would you consider a music professor at Juliard a leading authority? In classical music? In popular music? In country Western? And is there a difference between an artist and an expert who is an "authority" on any one area of music? It's only a matter of opinion. Whose opinion? And is the "authority" also a good artist?
Hypnosis can be used to reduce pain. Hypnosis can be used to quit smoking. Hypnosis can be used for weight reduction. Hypnosis can be used to overcome phobias. Hypnosis can be used to reduce stress or anxiety. Hypnosis can be used for entertainment. Can any one person be an expert in all areas? It's only a matter of opinion. Whose opinion?
I personally recognize the late Dave Elman as a leading 20th Century pioneer of widespread acceptance of hypnosis by physicians. I personally recognize LeCron & Bordeaux as 20th Century pioneers as well. I personally recognize the late Milton Erickson, M.D., as the Grandfather of modern hypnotherapy. I personally recognize the late Charles Tebbetts as the leading authority on diversified client-centered hypnosis. I personally recognize Arthur Winkler, PhD (still living), as the leading authority on spiritual uses of hypnosis. I personally recognize Ormond McGill (still living) as the world expert on stage hypnosis. Since medical applications of hypnosis is not my area of expertise, I am not qualified to give my opinion on the leading authority of medical applications of hypnosis.
There are some who give public seminars for smoking cessation and/or weight reduction who represent themselves as "authority" within the hypnotherapy profession; and the negative aversion suggestions and/or disempowerment approach indicate to me their lack of training. They frequently make promises of outrageous "success rates" which are as unbelievable as they sound. If they knew half of what they say they know about hypnotherapy, they would inform their audiences how to wisely choose a Hypnotherapist for the needed private follow-up sessions. Success in marketing does not qualify that person as an "authority" in hypnosis.
There are some who feel they are so much more qualified than others that they would like to have total control over all who practice hypnotherapy. There is already an uphill battle because certain psychologists would like to outlaw hypnotherapy by defining it as part of the practice of psychology. Also, according to information received from the O.P.E.I.U., there have already been attempts made in at least two states to legally require hypnotherapists to belong to the A.C.H.E. in order to practice hypnotherapy. In my opinion, NO ONE GROUP nor any one hypnosis association should have total control over hypnotherapy in this country. Be loyal to principles, and give your loyalty in degrees to those who earn it--not those who demand it.
Let him or her who is considered a "leading authority" be so designated by others and not by himself or herself.
Interview about Hypnosis
1. Why did you choose to get into hypnotism?
If hypnotism was as powerful as I'd been led to believe, it certainly seemed worth investigating.
2. How does someone learn to become a hypnotist?3. Where do you go to learn hypnotism?
There are hypnotism courses, books and plenty of information on the internet. The best hypnotists have the best training, plenty of experience and the best intentions.
4. Why does someone usually choose to be hypnotised?
Many reasons. One is the same reason as in answer 1. Another is that people often want avoid thinking about their problem, so they'd rather be "asleep" as it is dealt with. With stage hypnosis, a significant number want to entertain their friends.
5. What are post-hypnotic suggestions and how long will they last after being given while in hypnosis?
PHS are simply any suggestion you might be given. There is no real distinction between those given in a trance-like state and those in your everyday life. How long they last is variable. Could be a split-second or could be the rest of your life. Depends on how appropriate they are for you and how receptive you were to them.
6. Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, though people will respond better to some inductions and/or hypnotists.
7. What can self-hypnosis be used for?
Anything hypnosis is used for.
8. Does someone have to believe in hypnosis for it to work?
No, but the hypnotist must take that into account. Hypnotists often use "convincers" to get you to believe you are capable of responding. These are things like having your arm float up spontaneously. If you don't believe in hypnosis then you cannot resist it, thereby making it more likely to work in some cases.
9. What is the difference between hypnosis and self-hypnosis?
Self-hypnosis only involves one person.
10. Is hypnosis approved by the American Medical Association?
No idea. I do know that in certain states you have to be licensed to hypnotise people. This is crazy because it's quite easy to hypnotise people accidentally.I'm British. Here the government neither approves nor disapproves.
11. Are people aware of what happens during hypnosis ?
Depends. Nearly all naturally occurring hypnosis happens without anyone's awareness. With both stage hypnosis and most hypnotherapy, the trance subject is capable of being aware of far more than they would otherwise be aware of.
12. What is Naturally Occurring Hypnosis?
One definition of hypnosis is that all communication is hypnosis. All the time we are influencing others, we are hypnotising them. It's impossible to define where communication ends and hypnosis starts.
13. What are the qualities of a hypnotisable person -- Who can and who can not be hypnotised?
Everyone can be hypnotised, though the best subjects are usually those who've been trained and want to be hypnotised.
14. How does the hypnosis process work? / What do you have to do to hypnotise someone?
According to the definition in 12, you can't not hypnotise people. Even if you are not speaking to them, your presence will affect them in some slight way.One way to think about hypnosis is that people respond mainly to their own thoughts. If you think something is scary, your heart rate and perspiration rate increases etc.To hypnotise someone, you can simply influence what they're thinking about.Movies do it all the time.
15. Can you hypnotize someone without them knowing it?
Yes, though deliberate intentions (eg making someone buy something) can be more difficult to achieve. It is usually a more passive affair and often safer.
16. What does it feel like to be hypnotised?
Varies for different people and the kind of trance state. Other naturally occurring trance states are motorway driving, reading a book, waiting for an elevator, queuing etcUsually, being hypnotised feels wonderful.
17. Can a person be left in a hypnotic trance?
Not really. You might tell someone to stay in trance until they've solved their problem, and they might stay in trance for 6 hours. But apart from that, people wake up when they want to.
18. Why do people do strange things on stage when hypnotised?
Mostly because they either want to or they believe they have to.
19. Can a person be made to do something that they don't want to do?
If you scream suddenly at someone, you might scare them, even though they don't want to be.
Unless you think the hypnotist controls you, you are likely to have MORE control over what you do in a trance-like state than an every day state of mind. This is half the reason hypnotherapy is so powerful.
There is an important note here though, we often say that people have 2 minds, a conscious mind and an unconscious one. If there is a conflict between them, then you might do something your unconscious mind wants you to do even if your conscious mind doesn't want to do it. Some people often complain of "shooting themselves in the foot" or "getting in their own way". With such a person, you might aim for them being consciously unaware of the suggestions they are given, or to subsequently to forget them consciously. Subjectively, this can feel like you are asleep, or being distracted for a length of time.
20. Do doctors use hypnosis?
Yes, though mostly without knowing about it. This is an example of naturally occurring hypnosis. When people see their doctor, they are likely to be in a very altered state of mind. The doctor is an authority figure. Anything the doctor says can be acted on as a post-hypnotic suggestion. If the doctor convinces you that a pill is going to cure you, placebo research shows that, on average, the pill is likely to work 30-50% better. If the doctor convinces you that you have 6 months to live, that's a potentially fatal post-hypnotic suggestion.
21. Is hypnosis dangerous?
Can be, as above, but people who are trained in hypnosis know how to use it safely. As such, the number of people seriously hurt by trained hypnotists is as low as for aromatherapy and Reiki for example, much lower than physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic, and hugely much lower than traditional medicine.
22. Is someone asleep or unconscious while under hypnosis?
You might be able to hypnotise someone to go into any state of mind using hypnosis. And many hospitals now give patients under general anaesthetic earplugs as this can be a very suggestible state of mind. But the states of mind hypnotists usually aim for are very different for this or being asleep.
23. What problems can be solved using hypnosis?
Hypnosis is not a panacea, but with the help of one of the best hypnotists in the world, pretty much anything can be achieved. We will never know the limits.
24. What is the relationship between hypnosis and meditation?
There are many types of meditation. But the most usual method for beginners is similar to self-hypnosis in many ways.Meditation usually involves deep relaxation, which can be important with self-hypnosis. Both involve sitting quietly and influencing one's mind.
But meditation is usually intended to empty the mind and problems can be solved by neutralising any bad emotions and allowing the mind to find its own solutions. And self-hypnosis usually entrains the mind in a particular direction.
25. What is the secret of stage hypnosis?
The main one is to get everyone to believe you have power. In stage hypnosis, people often carry out suggestions because they believe they have to. In hypnotherapy, many people don't respond particularly well to this so a co-operative approach is usually aimed at.

What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness like the waking and sleeping states. It is a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind is distracted, producing heightened suggestibility and increased awareness, allowing access to the subconscious mind through the imagination and power of pretense. It produces the ability to experience internal thoughts and images as real. It is important to note that under hypnosis suggestibility is increased only so long as the suggestion is congruent with the subject’s conscious mind.
Does the hypnotist control the subject?
No. Hypnosis is a cooperative effort between the hypnotist and the subject. The subject willingly enters a state of suggestibility. However, if a suggestion contrary to the subject’s conscious morality is given, the subject promptly leaves the hypnotic state and returns to full wakefulness. This has been demonstrated numerous time under research conditions.
Can I be hypnotized against my will?
Sine the hypnotic or trance state is a naturally occurring state of consciousness, we enter the trance state many times a day. Typically when we read an absorbing book, or watch an absorbing movie we enter the trance state. There are many other times when we automatically enter a trance state. When we drive a car and suddenly time passes without our knowledge we have passed the time in a hypnotic trance.
The real issue is
whether we can be controlled against our will and there the answer is clearly in the negative.
I have very strong will power. Can I be hypnotized?
Yes. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and is about learning to be hypnotized. In fact having a strong will power is a slight advantage in learning to be hypnotized and entering the trance state. The most important thing which help learning to enter the trance state is having a strong imagination and desire to be hypnotized.
Can everyone be hypnotized?
Most people can learn to enter the trance state quickly. Some people take longer time to learn the skill.
Milton Erickson claimed he had managed to hypnotize almost everyone and there were a few he was still working on.
What problems can be solved using hypnosis?
Hypnosis is excellent in helping people:
Become nonsmokers.
Control their weight.
Increase learning capacity -- leading to better grades.
Reduce exam anxiety.
Boost self-esteem..
Control habits such as nail biting.
Reduce pain. *
Aid in preparation to surgery and other medical treatment. *
NOTE: Medical hypnosis is performed as an adjunct to normal medical treatment.
Can you make my husband/wife/child a nonsmoker using hypnosis?
Not if they are not motivated internally. Hypnosis is no panacea. It works with the cooperation of the hypnotherapist and the subject to bring about a result desired by the subject's conscious mind. When the subject is highly motivated to become a nonsmoker, hypnosis helps rid of the noxious habit.
Is it true that Freud started with hypnosis?
Yes. He started his psychotherapy with hypnosis with the help of Breuer who was an excellent hypnotist and had no problem with use of hypnosis. However in 1895 Freud separated with Breuer. Freud had lost his teeth thanks to over-abuse of Cocaine and his false teeth did not fit too well. Thus he lisped and soon discovered that his lisping precluded him from being a great hypnotist. Therefore he developed his talking therapy and developed the "couch" with the therapist sitting out of view of the client. Freud mentioned that his talking therapy was for the rich and would need 300 sessions to produce cure.
Who was Milton H. Erickson?
Milton Erickson is the father of modern hypnotherapy. He used a non-directive approach to hypnotherapy. He would just tell stories and his clients would just enter into a deep trance.... Once in this altered state they listened to metaphors.... They often did not feel any different and did not imagine that they had been in a trance.... The session would come to an end..... . And the client would find the problem has disappeared.... Many a time they would not even realize they had been hypnotized and at times claimed they had never had the problem...
Erickson believed we all have the all the resources needed.... The job of the hypnotist is just to be a guide....
s
What is the relationship between hypnosis and meditation?
By meditation here I mean mantra meditation where one repeats a word (mantram) over and over concentrating on the gaps in between the words. In hypnosis one has words and silence but one concentrates on the words. The end results are similar, in producing a relaxing, healing state of consciousness.
What is the secret of stage hypnosis?
The people selected are extroverts who are the life of the party. They would do wild and crazy things even when not hypnotized. The stage hypnotist then chooses the most suggestible of these self selected showoffs. During the stage show he further selects those who are most fun to do the most outrageous things.
What is self-hypnosis?
All hypnosis is in fact self-hypnosis. When we use the term self-hypnosis or auto-hypnosis we mean hypnosis without the intervention of a hypnotist or a guide.
Who discovered hypnosis?
The
beginnings of hypnosis is lost in the mists of prehistory. Modern hypnosis began with Mesmer. The term hypnosis was coined by James Braid.

Who was David Elman?
David Elman was the creator of the Elman technique which uses the power of imagination and pretense to enter a trance rapidly. Here is a rapid Elman technique. Close your eyelids and relax your eyes and pretend you cannot open them. Once you have pretended fully that you cannot open them, try in vain to open your eyelids and find with great fun and amazement that you cannot open them.

What are the dangers of hypnosis?
Hypnosis is counter indicated for schizophrenics and other extremely unstable personality but is safe for people with reasonably stable people. Like any other intervention it is important to choose a competent hypnotherapist who is compassionate and has empathy for you.

Who was Franz Anton Mesmer?
Modern hypnosis begins wit Franz Anton Mesmer. He was a Viennese physician who at first used magnets in the treatment of patients. Later when one day he could not find a magnet he used his hands in the mistaken idea that by use of so many magnets his body had become magnetized. He managed to produce many cures and had a huge prosperous practice in Paris. This made other physicians jealous and they plotted against Mesmer.. Mesmer played in their hands by agreeing to have a Royal commission to investigate him. I n 1784 King Louis XVI appointed a commission of scientists and physicians to investigate Mesmer's methods; among the commission's members were the American inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin and the French chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier. Unfortunately Mesmer believed that an occult force, which he termed "animal magnetism," flowed through him into the subject. The commission searched for rays, forces or something which went from Mesmer to his clients and since they found none, they reported that Mesmer was unable to support his scientific claims, and the mesmerist movement thereafter declined. Thanks to this episode Mesmerism was associated with superstition and black magic.
What is a brief history of hypnosis?
The beginnings of hypnosis is lost in the mists of prehistory. Shamans and "witch doctors" and other religious leaders use trance and hypnotic phenomena. My guess is that the cave paintings were an aid to visualization and were used for religious rituals which induced trance. Diodorus of Sicily writes, "The ancient Egyptian priests threw each other into trances." The first recorded use of hypnosis is the sleep temples of Egypt about 3000 years ago. The high priests would enter these temples in their full regalia and chant sacred chants and put the patients to sleep and suggested they be cured. These types of temples were later introduced to the Greek and Roman worlds. It is thought that the magi of Babylonia and Persia practiced some rituals which gave them control over the mind and body of men. Hippocrates believed in somnambulistic powers.
Paracelsus the great physician of the middle ages believed in a theory of double magnetism wherein he believed that magnetic fluid of a healthy body attracts the weaker and deteriorated magnet of an unhealthy one. The idea of usage of magnets (real or animal) increased until the time
Mesmer with whom modern hypnosis begins. At first he used magnets in the treatment of patients. Later he used his hands in the mistaken idea that his body had become magnetized. He managed to produce many cures and had a huge prosperous practice in Paris. However a royal commission discredited him and he returned to Vienna and continued a small practice.
Scientific hypnosis was introduced by James Braid, British surgeon who did much to divorce trance phenomenon from prevailing theories of animal magnetism. In 1841, when well established in a surgical practice at Manchester, Braid developed a keen interest in mesmerism, as hypnotism was then called. Proceeding with experiments, he rejected the popular notion that the ability to induce hypnosis is connected with the magical passage of a fluid or other influence from the operator to the patient. In stead, he adopted a physiological view that hypnosis is a kind of nervous sleep, induced by fatigue resulting from the intense concentration necessary for staring fixedly at a bright, inanimate object. Braid introduced the term "hypnosis" (from Hypnos the Greek God of sleep) in his book Neurypnology (1843). Interestingly he later realized that hypnosis is different from sleep and tried to change the term to mono-ideaism, but thankfully (for us) the term hypnosis had stuck. He was mainly interested in the therapeutic possibilities of hypnosis and reported successful treatment of diseased states such as paralysis, rheumatism, and aphasia. He hoped that hypnosis could be used to cure various seemingly incurable "nervous" diseases and also to alleviate the pain and anxiety of patients in surgery.
Following Braid’s pioneering work, Dr. Esdaile performed many operations in Calcutta, India with help of hypnosis as the anaesthesia. He managed to cut the death rate from more than 40% to less than 5%. However, when he returned to Britain he was blackballed by the church and other surgeons. Soon afterward, chemical anaesthesia was discovered and hypnosis went from medical practice to circuses and shows.
However, in the meanwhile, Bernheim and Liebeault form the Nancy school in France. They wrote that hypnosis involved no physical forces but was a combination of psychologically mediated responses to suggestions. At about the same time, the Austrian physician Sigmund Freud visited France and was impressed by the therapeutic potential of hypnosis for neurotic disorders. On his return to Vienna he used hypnosis (with the collaboration of Joseph Breuer as the hypnotist) to help neurotics recall disturbing events that they had apparently forgotten. However, Freud had badly fitting false teeth and could not speak well. Thus he was not a good hypnotist and soon when he stopped his collaboration with Breuer, Freud dropped hypnosis in favor of free association.
There were so many important contributors to our field in this century. I will name a few and a quote or discovery:
William W. Cook MD (1901): "Hypnotism is the most practical science of the age.... It does not require years of study to become a hypnotist for this great blessing to mankind is a natural endowment possessed by all...."
Emil Coué (1900s) : "Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better." "All hypnosis is self-hypnosis."
Clark Hull (1933 – wrote book: "Hypnosis and suggestibility"): "Anything that assumes trance causes trance."
George Estabrooks (1943): Very directive approach.
Leslie LeCron (1943): Ideomotor signals. Hypnotic depth.
Milton H. Erickson: Non-directive permissive approach – metaphors – telling stories. "Your patients will be your patients because their conscious minds are out of rapport with their unconscious minds." "I allow my patients to enter a trance in which ever way they desire." "When a client walks in I assume he brings in both his conscious and unconscious minds."
Dave Elman (1964): The Elman method.
Bandler and Grinder: NLP. "All communication is hypnosis.... I disagree, nothing is hypnosis; hypnosis doesn’t exist." "When we first started you could only practice hypnotherapy if you were an MD so we just gave it a new name NLP and did hypnosis."
Finally a most important date: 1958 – at last AMA accepts hypnosis as a useful tool within the tools available to medicine.
What are the stages of hypnosis?
Stages of hypnosis start with light and go as far deep as sonambulanism.
How deep do I need to go to change?
It has been demonstrated that even very light trance is sufficient to produce major change.
What is NLP?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a modern form of waking hypnosis created by Richard Bandler computer scientist and John Grinder a linguist. They modeled such masters of change as Milton Erickson, Virginia Satier, Fredrick Perls and discovered ways of producing extremely rapid change.
The constituant words of NLP are:
Neuro - the nervous system (which traverses the whole body and is more than just the brain) through which one experinces the external and internal worlds. These include our senses:
Visual -- our sense of seeing.
Auditory -- our sense of hearing.
Kinesthetic -- our sense of thouch and feelings.
Olfactory -- our sense of smell.
Gustatory -- our sense of tastes.
Linguistic -- language both sysmbolic (verbal) and nonverbal communication with others and self. These include:
Pictures -- V or Visual (in NLP parlance).
Sounds -- A or Auditory Tonal. You may find some NLP books using At for this.
Feelings -- K or Kinesthetic.
Tastes -- G or gustatory.
Smells -- O or olfactory.
Self Talk or internal dialogue -- Ad or Auditory digital.
Programming -- is the ability to discover the mind's internal programs and changing them to produce appropriate behavior. As Richard Bandler once wrote, "Who is driving the bus?" We are always being programmed by our parents, loved ones, pets, friends, enemies, strangers, TV, papers, internet.... In NLP we consciously decide to program ourselves and change our behavior and internal states.
In NLP we can produce very rapid change by altering the brain's internal maps. Basically the maps are in term of V,A,K,G,O,Ad components and their relationships to each other in time, quality and quantity.
Some self-esteem boosters using NLP techniques:
Boost your self-esteem by countering negative experiences using NLP
Boost your self-esteem by countering negative experiences using NLP -- Part II
Boost your self-esteem by being flexible
Boost your self-esteem by deflecting inner critics II: Use an NLP deflection technique....
Boost your self-esteem by understanding that there is no such thing as failure – only results....

What is Time-LineTM therapy?
Time-LineTM therapy is a very important NLP technique which produces rapid change by manipulating events and decisions of the past and visualization of future events.
How can hypnosis help me improve my grades?
Hypnosis can increase one's self-confidence and improve one's learning capacity.
How can hypnosis help me improve my test scores?
Hypnosis can reduce one's exam anxiety and increase one's memory retention. Remember that memory is state dependent. That is you remember better if you are in the same mental and physical state as you were when you learned something. So if you can relax both when learning and taking the test your memory retention and recall increases and your test scores will improve. Also if you can make the physical setting of the place where you learn similar to the room you will take the test your test scores will get better. Through hypnosis we can simulate the exam and examination room and make the state links between the learning state and the testing state and improve our test scores. We also teach an ideo-motor response technique to allow our unconscious mind to communicate with our conscious mind and bring out information that we know but have apparently forgotten.
Can you help me with my phobia?
NLP is excellent in reduction and removal of phobias.
What is the relationship between guided meditation and hypnosis?Guided meditation and visualization are forms of hypnosis. In guided meditation the subject is taken to places in the imagination and led to healing spaces. It is important to understand that when we talk about visualization we do not just mean using one's inner eyes to see the "vision" but people do whatever is most natural to them. Some people are more sound oriented and use their auditory faculties to hear the visualization. While other feel the meditation in their bodies and yet others will concentrate on the meaning of the words in the guided meditation. The point is to use your powers of imagination however is best for you. Just go with the guided meditation, have fun and you may discover most fantastic transformative inner spaces. Recently we conducted a guided meditation with a group of thirty people. Next week one of the subjects told us that she had a major breakthrough after the meditation. As we have emphasized all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and the responsibility and kudos for the breakthrough is all through her. But when we can be of assistance in producing such breakthroughs it humbles us and make us feel so good and makes our studies all worth while. Our thanks to all who come on these transformative journeys with us.

Past-Life Therapy.... Uggg! You really mean I have lived before? Two third of the world population including one third of all Americans believe in reincarnation. However past-life therapy is a therapeutic technique which does not rely on any specific belief in reincarnation or actual past lives. In this therapeutic technique you imagine yourself in a past life situation which has a direct relationship with your current problems in your present life in the here and now. If you happen to believe in reincarnation you may wish to look at your moving and healing experience as actual memories of a past life. However, you may find the idea of reincarnation as abhorrent and absurd and then you can look upon your experience as a healing metaphor for your current issues. The point is that past-life therapy works no matter which way you believe and we do not wish to impose our belief system on anyone else. If you are imaginative, adventurous, and want to have lots of fun while being healed of past hurts, then past-life therapy may be the right modality for you.

Kamasutra Positions

The Preludes
Ardent young men, do not neglect the preliminaries! Endeavour to satisfy your mistress. Listen to her desires. Some men, carried away by the power of their desire, forget the prelude, only to be surprised when they are pushed away later! Yet it is such a delight to kiss, to caress, to nibble one another... To explore with your hand or your mouth her body, her breasts, her neck, her belly, down to her innermost curves. Fulfilled, the beloved shall return these kisses and caresses wholeheartedly. No part of the beloved's body should be neglected. Her lover shall make it his duty to discover them, to reveal to his mistress all the pleasure she can receive from them.
When Kama is practiced by men of the four castes according to the rules of the Holy Writ (i.e., by lawful marriage) with virgins of their own caste, it then becomes a means of acquiring lawful progeny and good fame, and it is not also opposed to the customs of the world. On the contrary the practice of Kama with women of the higher castes, and with those previously enjoyed by others, even though they be of the same caste, is prohibited. But the practice of Kama with women of the lower castes, with women excommunicated from their own caste, with public women, and with women twice married, is neither enjoined nor prohibited. The object of practicing Kama with such women is pleasure only.

Indrani

In ancient times darkness ruled. The gods, powerless against it, imagined and 'created' Indra. Indra the invincible killed the archdemon Vritra and, by so doing, allowed the organized world to triumph over chaos. Indra is beautiful like the sun. Like the sun, he is radiant. Only a 'Padmini', a perfect woman with one thousand qualities, can aspire to such a husband. But, as ancient authors claim, there is only one Padmini in ten million women. Still, the others need not despair! Through Iong and patient practice, any woman can perfect the position of Indrani, her legs tucked up, her feet resting on her thighs. Then she and her husband share a genuine encounter with the divine essence, token of fertility and love.
Indrani draws up both her knees until they nuzzle the curves of her breasts; her feet find her lover's armpits.Small girls love this posture, but becoming a goddess takes a lot of practice. She cups and lifts her buttocks with her palms, spreads wide her thighs, and digs in her heels besides her hips, while you caress her breasts: this is Utphallaka (The Flower in Bloom

Churning of the Cream

Kamadhenu, the celestial cow with the head of a woman, born from the churning of the Sea of Milk, has the gift of making every wish come true. The deserted wife prays to her. O Kamadhenu! She bemoans the happy times when her beloved showered her with caresses. And here is the lover returning! He had a dream, he says. Kamadhenu was before him. She had his beauty's face, her mouth was trembling, her beautiful eyes glistening with tears. Repentant, he throws himself to her knees. The lover forgives him. He embraces her, crushing her nearly to the point of suffocation. Hugs and kisses on her thighs, hugs and kisses on her breasts. Thanking the celestial cow for opening his eyes, the lover turns his lingam all around inside the delicious yoni. Divine reunion. Churning the cream.During lovemaking, ten types of blows may be struck with the penis, but of these only Upasripta (Natural), which is instinctive even to untutored cowherds, results in full clitoral stimulation. It is a gentle forward stroke which may be varied for depth and speed, allowing a subtlety, rhythm and spontaneity which the other nine each lack to some degree. If you grasp your penis and move it in circles inside her yoni, it is Manthana (Churning). When you strike sharply down into the yoni, it is Hula (the Double-edged Knife). If, when her hips are raised by a pillow, you strike a rising blow, it is Avamardana (Rubbing). If you hold your penis pressed breathlessly to her womb it is Piditaka (Pressing). If you withdraw completely and then strike her violently to the womb, it is Nirghata (the Buffet). Continuous pressure on one side of her yoni is Varahaghata (the Boar's Blow).

Mixture of Sesamum Seed with Rice
Lunch-time siesta, exhausting heat. Even the flies are sleeping. Secretly, the engaged couple, shy and charming, meet. Straight kiss, bent kiss, turned kiss, pressed kiss, fighting tongues... They are well-mannered young people who have been taught the art of loving. But wait! Quick to forget the wise lessons, carried away by passion, they tear off, rip off the sweaty silk clothes which stick to their skin. They roll down on the cold, tiled floor like two young dogs. Mouth against mouth, gazing into each other's eyes, arms, thighs, legs tightly entwined... It is difficult to tell one from the other. The mixture of sesamum seed with rice. Lingam and yoni meet. The engaged couple have celebrated their wedding night prematurely! If, encircling and trapping her thighs with yours, you grip so hard that she cries out in pain, it is Ratipasha (Love's Noose), a device most charming to the ladies. Her limbs, entwined in yours like tendrils of fragrant jasmine creeper, draw taut and slowly relax in the gentle rhythm of linga and yoni: this is Lataveshta (the Clinging Creeper). She draws her limbs together, clasping her knees tightly to her breasts, her yoni, like an opening bud, offered up for pleasure: this is known as Mukula (the Bud).

Yawning

A pale moon shines down on the sleeping beauty. Kneeling beside her, the lover wakes her with a kiss on her modest brow. Keeping her eyelids lowered, she smiles. Grasping her rounded hips, the lover slides her onto his knees. The beauty raises her legs, widely spread. Her ankle bracelets ring out joyously. The lover, eager, wants to possess what the beauty reveals to him. The tease shies away, the lover protests. To silence him, the beauty places her plump foot on his mouth. One by one, the lover kisses her pearly nails, nibbles her little toes. The beauty coos. She coos so loudly that she wakes the dove. The bird, alarmed, responds. The beauty laughs. Taking advantage of her distraction, with one ingenious move, the lover slides into the coveted yoni.Full of desire, saying sweet words, approach her with your body stiff as a pole and drive straight forward to pierce her lotus and join your limbs: experts call it Madandhvaja (The Flag of Cupid).

The Cobra

He is a perfect man, educated, rich and respected by all. Only his wife knows his weakness. Valiant and skilful at all sorts of games, he lacks vigour in those of love. So she gives him potions to drink, milk mixed with sugar, uchchata root, pepper and liquorice. Or rice with sparrow's eggs. She covers herself with perfumed unguents and oils and, with skilful caresses, awakens the lazy lingam. Erect from her hisses, it is eventually ready to act. Then, like a snake, the beauty turns around, slithers and coils up among the cushions. The husband did not expect this reversal of the situation. He is all excited now. Blindly, his lingam searches for the yoni. It is the coupling of the cobra. If, sitting facing her, you grasp her ankles and fasten them like a chain behind your neck, and she grips her toes as you make love, it is the delightful Padma (the Lotus).

The Conch

Sea-woman, her hair soaked with sweat, coils up like seaweed around her lover's arms. Siren-woman, her teeth have the same lustre as the pearls adorning her neck. He, the fisherman, tries to grasp the pink tongue between her lips, but it flees quickly like a small fish. He holds his breath and dives towards the yoni and its holy glints. A cruel bite draws a cry from him. She does not let her prey go, the moray eel! Octopus-woman, she enlaces the fisherman and drags him down to the bottom of the abyss. Joyously, he lets himself drown... Eventually, the beauty surrenders. He then climbs astride her lifted thigs and mounts her, beeping her firmly in position under his knees. In the ocean of pleasures, they are the two united valves of a beautiful shellfish: the conch. She lies flat on her back, you sit between her parted knees, raise them, hook her feet over your thighs, catch hold of her breasts, and enjoy her: this is Manmathpriya (Dear to Cupid).

The Pestle

The room is perfumed, the flowered bed ready for love, but these two beep their distance, sulking. They are not lovers, they are deceived spouses. The unfaithful wife of one is attracted to the fickle husband of the other. They meet to talk it over. The betrayed wife sheds tears. The deceived husband is duty-bound to console her. How curious — he thought he did not like chubby women, yet this one arouses him endlessly. He wipes her cheeb with a caress. Refusing to be indebted to such a nice man, she gives him a kiss. Rivalling each other in politeness, they cuddle, tickle, embrace. And now, clasping her in his arms, erect like a mast in the middle of the bed, he pounds her and polishes her. Delicious revenge.Stiff as a pole in the bed's center, she lies making love, cooing and warbling like a woodpigeon, the jewel of her clitoris well-polished: this is Mausala (the Pestle). When she lies on her back with her two thighs pressed tightly together and you make love to her, keeping your thighs outside hers, it is Gramya (the Rustic).

The Black Bee

You no longer recognize your sweet love, this perfect and devoted wife. Is it the full moon? Today she resembles an Amazon. You sense that the proud warrior is ready to vanquish you and, offering her your belly like the wolf, you surrender. She mounts you, she is going to tame you. No use trying to resist. Her arrogant breasts, her flat belly, her strong and muscled thighs, her greedy mouth are so many weapons. Yours is here, modest but already up for the fight. The beauty grasps it. Sitting upon you, legs tucked up, she sucks your lingam into her yoni, until you cry out. Then — you did not know of such a hidden talent — she starts spinning like a top around your organ erected as a pivot. When she takes the man's role, your lady has the choice of three famous lovemaking techniques: If she uses the Mare's Trick, gripping your penis with her yoni's vice, squeezing and stroking it, holding it inside her for a hundred heart-beats, it is known as Samdamsha (the Tongs). If, drawing up her feet, she revolves her hips so that your penis circles deep within her yoni, you arching your body to help her, it is Bhramara (the Bee). If she now swings her hips in wide cir

The Mare

The reputation of the courtesan of the land of Andra is firmly established. She is said to make love with consummate artistry. It is also said that, unlike the mare, it is she who climbs astride her male. And when the lover is well in hand, tamed, saturated with caresses, she seizes his lingam. Deep inside her yoni, she squeezes it, strangles it: it is the blow of a mare. Men would like to own her. Women, too, and among them good wives who seek to perfect themselves in the art of love. But the courtesan of the land of Andra is not for sale. She is already rich enough. Today she is said not to have a lover. And all her love goes to Babu, her elephant.
When her passion has ebbed, she should rest, bending forward to lay her forehead upon yours without disturbing your yoked bodies: it won't be long before desire stirs again. Catching your penis, the lady with dark eyes like upturned lotus petals guides it into her yoni, clings to you and shakes her buttocks: this is Charunarikshita (Lovely Lady in Control). Enthroned on your penis, she places both hands on the bed and makes love, while you press your two hands to her thudding heart: this is Lilasana (Seat of Sport).

The Swing

He is a man of taste. In his garden there are two swings, one revolving and one ordinary. He spends many pleasant moments there, conversing with his friends. Sometimes, alone, he switches from one to the other until his head spins. But his favourite swing has neither ropes, nor wood, nor cushions. He finds it with his favourite mistress, a skilful and passionate courtesan. Adorned with pearls and gold, a simple veil of silk hiding her nudity, she stretches out her arms towards him. The night will be long... They revisit each of the sixty-four chapters. And, to finish, the swing. She sits on his lap, her legs raised. With one hand, he holds her, with the other, he caresses her breasts. She swings back and forth, faster and faster, until bliss.Sitting face to face in bed, her breasts pressed tight against your chest, let each of you lock heels behind the other's waist, and lean back clasping one another's wrists. Now, set the swing gently in motion, your beloved, in pretended fear, clinging to your body with her flawless limbs, cooing and moaning with pleasure: this is Dolita (The Swing).

Splitting the Bamboo

A charming scene: two young peasants singing under the moon. With the same slender figure, the same graceful gait, they look like the male and female forms of one single being. Their fresh voices chase the darkness away. They reach the river, at the spot named 'the bath of the goddesses'. Undressed in the twinkling of an eye, they dive... Now they lie down in the grass, fearless of snakes. Perched on top of a tree, Garuda, the bird of Vishnu, protects them. With the blessing of the sympathetic god, they soon become experts in the art of loving. With one leg stretched out along his slender body, the young girl puts her other leg on the boy's shoulder, then she inverses the legs' position, she alternates them. It is splitting the bamboo. Celestial ballet! If your lover, seated above you with feet lotus-crossed and her body held erect and still makes love to you, it is known as Yugmapada (the Foot Yoke). If she strides you, facing your feet, brings both her feet up to your thighs, and works her hips frantically, it is known as Hansa-lila (Swan Sport). Your lover places one foot on your ankle, lodges her other foot just above your knee, and rides you, swinging and rotating her hips: this is Garuda (Garuda). If you lie flat on your back with legs stretched out and your lover sits astride you, facing away and grasping your feet, it is called Virsha (the Bull). Clasping each other's hands, you lie sprawled like two starfish making love, her breasts stabbing your chest, her thighs stretched out along yours: this is Devabandha (the Coitus of the Gods). Lying upon you, your beloved moves round like a wheel, pressing hands one after the other on the bed, kissing your body as she circles: experts call this Chakrabandha (the Wheel). If, by means of some contraption, your lover suspends herself above you, places your linga in her yoni and pulleys herself up and down upon it, it is Utkalita (the Orissan).

The Curving Knot

The friends linger behind. One discusses the matters of love. The master of the house, however, thinks only of his befoved who awaits him. He thinks of the 'line of jewels' he left at the bottom of her back. This is what one calls a bite made with all of the teeth. One of the hosts recounts how he practises the curving knot position, which demands skill and suppleness. The master of the house smiles dreamily... Last night his beloved, as clever as a she-monkey, led him into this perilous exercise. His legs remember it still! Each partner puts their arms into the hollow of their fences and pulls their legs towards them. Holding each other's hands, yoni and lingam are brought closer. Reaching ecstasy in this delicate position is said to be a token of the lovers' eternal love. When your wife sits with both knees drawn tight to her body and you mirror this posture, it is known to experts in the art of love as Yugmapada (The Foot Yoke). Seated erect, the lovely girl folds one leg to her body and stretches the other along the bed, while you mirror her actions: this is Yugmapada (The Feet Yoke). Sitting erect, grip your lover's waist and pull her on to you, your loins continuously leaping together with a sound like the flapping of elephants' ears: this is Kirtibandha (the Knot of Fame).

The Sporting of a Sparrow

The young widow of a very old husband, she mourns for his tenderness and kindness. The river is grey. The flowers have lost their fragrance. Why was she stopped from throwing herself onto the pyre? She falls asleep. A tear rolls down her cheek, her sighs causing her lovely breasts to rise. Kama, the god without a body, is moved by this sight. He takes the shape of a handsome prince and lies down upon her. The perfume of jasmine mixes with the young man's musky odour. Brisk like a sparrow, the god's lingam goes back and forth continuously inside her yoni. She has never known anything like this with her husband. Her groans accompany the river's rumbling. The singing of the birds awakens her. Was it only a dream? Who would care! Today the mourning is over. She will go to the temple to make offerings to Kama, the god of all desires. In Samputa (the Jewel Case) your legs lie along hers caressing their whole length from toes to thighs. Your lover may be below you, or you may both lie on your sides, in which case she should always be on your left.
The Tigress

At last, the lover has returned. He has been away for a Iong time. The marks his embraces left on his beloved's body have Iong since faded. He is now intimidated as he faces his mistress. It appears as if these few weeks have transformed the beauty. He has never seen her so radiant. A doubt crosses his mind. Could she have deceived him? As if she had heard his jealous thoughts, the beauty digs her pearly nails into his shoulders. Tiger's claw, peacock's foot, leaf of a blue lotus, swollen bite, broken cloud, they use claws and teeth like wildcats. And then the cunning lover slides his hand between the beauty's thighs, caresses delicately the yoni, and turns the tigress into a purring and cuddly cat.If, seated face to face, your toes caress the lovely woman's nipples, her feet press your chest and you make love holding each other's hands it is Kaurma (The Tortoise). Seated, the lady raises one foot to point vertically over her head and steadies it with her hands, offering up her yoni for lovemaking: this is Mayura (the Peacock). If, sitting facing her, you grasp her ankles and fasten them like a chain behind your neck, and she grips her toes as you make love, it is the delightful Padma (the Lotus).

The Sharpening

Ardent young men, when you enter your mistress's yoni with your lingam, beware of spilling. By acting so grossly, you would leave her hungry for more. There are many ways in which a lingam shall behave with a yoni. Study your lover's reactions, read the look in her eyes. Because of her shyness, an inexperienced woman will not dare to express her desires. When you are in this situation, do not content yourself with merely pushing on. Any donkey can do that. Learn to break through by strikies the upper part of the yoni, then by rubbing the lower part. Try the blow of a bull, the blow of a boar. Then you will see your lover, putting aside all bashfulness, cry out, lose her head and direct the love congress in the growing rhythm of her pleasure. If long lovemaking exhausts you before your lover has reached her orgasm, you should allow her to roll you over your back and sit astride you, taking initiative. If the posture gives her deep pleasure, or you enjoy its novelty, she may transpose into it as a matter of course, taking great care, however, not to expel the linga from the temple of love. Consider: she climbs upon you, the flowers dropping from her tousled hair, her giggles turning to gasps; every time she bends to kiss your lips her nipples pierce your chest. As her hips begin to churn, her head, flung back, bobs ever faster; she scratches, pummels you with small fists, fastens her teeth in your neck, doing unto you what you've often done unto her.

Inversion

The women of Maharashtra adore every kind ot pleasure. The beautiful wife does not contradict this reputation. And, until dawn, she demands more from her husband. The poor man falls asleep... Never mind, she gives him a few betel leaves to chew, plies him with sweets, with fresh coconut milk. He can relax and she will take care of him. The husband lets himself drift. She rubs his body with a sandalwood unguent. Soon, the massages turn into caresses. The beauty excites his chest. He comes to and she mounts him. He would like to kiss her mouth but the naughty girl shies away, turns around, offering him her back. It is she who decides. She possesses him. Delicious submission. She lies on her front, grasping her ankles in her own hands and pulling them up behind her: this difficult posture is known to experts as Mallaka She stands on palms and feet; you stand behind her and lift one of her feet to your shoulder, enjoying the lovely girl: this is Traivikrama (the Stride). Seize her feet and lift them high (like a wheel barrow), drive your penis into her yoni and pleasure her with vigorous strokes: this is Kulisha (the Thunderbolt). You kneel, as in archery, take her on your lap and bend her forward till her breasts are pressed to her thighs: this is Ekabandha (One Knot).

The Elephant

How can you fail to marvel at the elephant! So much strength combined with so much delicacy. See its trunk: powerful enough to uproot a tree, it can still embrace with grace, touch and skim with subtlety. Women are frightened and surprised by the size of the lingam. Men apply themselves to taming this mythical rival. The imaginative lover, however, does not care about rivals — men, women or beasts! He has no trunk, but it matters not! He embraces his beloved with his arms, lifts her up, turns her around. Inhaling her intoxicating perfumes, his mouth explores her body. His lingam strikes the beauty's thighs, caresses her yoni. She appreciates his vigour! Today, for his lover's pleasure, he is Hastica the elephant. When your mistress lays breasts, arms and forehead to the carpet, raising her buttocks high, and you guide your penis into her yoni, it is Aibha (the Elephant). You lift her ankles high; she draws up and extends her legs as though she were crawling through the air: this is Hastika (the Elephant). Lying on her side, facing away, the fawn-eyed girl offers you her buttocks and your penis penetrates the house of love: this is Nagabandha (the Elephant).

The Dog

Unlike animals, the man presses his imagination into the service of love. Like a god, he transforms as he pleases, as the whim takes him. In accordance with his desires and those of his beauty, he turns into dog, fox, stag or elephant. In comparison, none have seen a bull mount a cow as men do. The beauty gets on all fours and, in that position, presents her rump which she wiggles suggestively. If she claws the carpet, mews and purrs, it is the congress of the cat. If she bleats and shabes her head violently, it is the assault of the goat. If, with tears in her eyes, she wails, it is the rut of the stag. If she groans, growls, licks her lover's finders, then it is the union of the dog.She bends well forward and grips the bedstead, her buttocks raised high; cup your hands to serpents' hoods and squeeze her jar-shaped breasts together:this is Dhenuka (the Milch Cow). If you mount her like a dog, gripping her waist, and she twists round to gaze into your face, experts in the art of love say it is Svanaka (the Dog). If the lady, eager for love, goes on all fours, humping her back like a doe, and you enjoy her from behind, rutting as though you'd lost all human nature, it is Hirana (the Deer). When, with lotus-feet set well-apart on the ground, she bends, placing a hand upon each thigh, and you take her from the rear, it is Gardabha (the Ass). If she lies on her stomach and you seize her ankles in one hand, lift them high and make love, tilting her chin back with your other hand, it is Marjara (the Cat).

Knee Elbow

There are some lovers who despise soft beds and cosy cushions. Their pleasure is heightened by danger or discomfort. Some choose places where their union may be discovered; others practise the most hazardous positions. Others still seek risk and difficulty. Their pleasure room is a garden where they lay themselves open to being seen. The beauty, one foot on her lover's thigh, her arms hanging from his neck, coos as she lifts herself up his body. She looks like she's climbing a tree! Now she clasps her beloved's chest between her slender legs. She is now perched on his lingam. While she is moving up and down, held up by her lover's powerful arms, he whispers suggestive words in her ear.She stands against the wall, lotus-hands on hips, long, lovely fingers reaching to her navel. Cup her foot in your palm and let your free hand caress your angel's limbs. Put your arm around her neck and enjoy her as she leans there at her ease. Vatsyayana and others who knew the art of love in its great days called this posture Tala (the Palm). If you lean back to a wall and your lover, clinging to your neck, places both her feet in your palms and thus makes love, this is Dvitala (Two Palms). If you lift your lover by passing your elbows under her knees and gripping her buttocks while she hangs fearfully from your neck, it is Janukurpara (the Knee Elbow). Your wife grips your neck and locks her legs around your waist: this is Kirti (Fame) - a posture not described in Kama Sutra or Ratirahasya . Never try it with heavy girls.

The Lovemaking of the Crow

No place is as poorly guarded as a harem. And no women more accessible than the king's wives. A determined young man only has to choose how to achieve his ends. Hidden inside a barrel or disguised as a maidservant, he will easily deceive the casual sentinels and the overworked stewards. He can also try to make himself invisible by using an appropriate potion. But the result is uncertain. The king's wives like to play games with strangers that are forbidden with their husband. The young man and the noble lady are lying against each other, head to tail. He explores her yoni while her pretty mouth gobbles up his lingam greedily. It is Kalila the crow, the posture of slaves and maidservants, that queens are so fond of.When your lover catches your penis in her hand and, shaping her lips to an 'O', lays them lightly to its tip, moving her head in tiny circles, this first step is called Nimitta (Touching). Next, grasping its head in her hand, she clamps her lips tightly about the shaft, first on one side then the other, taking great care that her teeth don't hurt you: this is Parshvatoddashta (Biting at the Sides). Now she takes the head of your penis gently between her lips, by turns pressing, kissing it tenderly and pulling at its soft skin: this is Bahiha-samdansha (the Outer Pincers). If next she allows the head to slide completely into her mouth and presses the shaft firmly between her lips, holding a moment before pulling away, it is Antaha-samdansha (the Inner Pincers). When she senses that your orgasm is imminent she swallows up the whole penis, sucking and working upon it with lips and tongue until you spend: this is Sangara (Swallowed Whole). With delicate fingertips, pinch the arched lips of her house of love very very slowly together, and kiss them as though you kissed her lower lip: this is Adhara-sphuritam (the Quivering Kiss). Now spread, indeed cleave asunder, that archway with your nose and let your tongue gently probe her yoni, with your nose, lips and chin slowly circling: it becomes Jihva-bhramanaka (the Circling Tongue). Let your tongue rest for a moment in the archway to the flower-bowed Lord's temple before entering to worship vigorously, causing her seed to flow: this is Jihva-mardita (the Tongue Massage). Next, fasten your lips to hers and take deep kisses from this lovely one, your beloved, nibbling at her and sucking hard at her clitoris: this is called Chushita (Sucked). Place your darling on a couch, set her feet to your shoulders, clasp her waist, suck hard and let your tongue stir her overflowing love-temple: this is called Bahuchushita (Sucked Hard). If the pair of you lie side by side, facing opposite ways, and kiss each other's secret parts using the ten techniques described above, it is known as Kakila (the Crow).

Apadravyas
Sometimes Kama, absent-minded, throws his arrow haphazardly. Thus one sees strange couples assembling. A man and a woman who should not have been brought together. They attract criticism, mockery. And yet, 'badly-matched' love defies time! This hare-man, thin and graceful, adores his elephant wife, as powerful as a giant. Their tastes, their preoccupations, lifee their bodies, are discordant. But they adore each other! And, in the games of love, their harmony is perfect. The hare-man knows all the subtle caresses that arouse his wife. Making use of Apadravyas, he increases the size of his frail lingam. There are all kinds of them in the pleasure room: gold armband, precious wood tube, ivory bracelet. They choose them according to how their lovemaking progresses.First rub your penis with wasp stings and massage it with sweet oil. When it swells, let it dangle for ten nights through a hole in your bed, going to sleep each night on your stomach. After this period use a cool ointment to remove the pain and swelling. By this method men... of insatiable sexual appetite, manage to keep their penises enlarged throughout their lives. By applying an ointment made from crushed barleria leaves to her yoni, the elephant woman can spend at least one night discovering the delights of being a doe. Likewise the doe can use honey mixed with powdered roots of lotus, madder, sal (tree of aromatic gum), the blue lotus and the mongoose plant to accomodate a stallion for one night.

The Stag

When he married her, she was a very young girl, almost a child. Now she is an accomplished woman, blessed with all the talents. They like to play and surprise each other. Today he finds her lying on the bed in the pleasure room. Her face is hidden by her splayed black hair. Slightly worried, he approaches. The wife has heard him and, with a swift move, she raises her rump. The fabrics fall away, revealing her superb buttocks. Without delay, savagely, like a stag in a rut, the husband mounts his wife. Suddenly, filled with scruples, he breaks off. Then the wife, with a move of her hip, encourages him and, in a dancing rhythm, she moves along with the back and forth motion of her man, who wails with pleasure. And now for the love postures with which sculptors adorn our temple walls. When a couple make love standing, or leaning against a wall or a pillar, it is called Sthita (Steadied). When the woman sits in her lover's cradled hands, her arms around his neck, thighs gripping his waist, her feet pushing back and forth against a wall, it is Avalambitaka (Suspended). When, catching and crushing your lover in the cage of your arms, you force her knees apart with yours and sink slowly into her, it is Dadhyayataka (Churning Curds). When she leans against a wall, planting her feet as widely apart as possible, and you enter the cave between her thighs, eager for lovemaking, it is Sammukha (Face-to-face). If, as you lean against the wall, your lady twines her thighs around yours, locks her feet to your knees, and clasps your neck, making love very passionately, it is Dola (the Swing).

spiritual Kama Sutra of world

The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana ("Kama Sutra" is Sanskrit for "Aphorisms of Love") is an extraordinary and fascinating work that deserves careful reading and study. Written in ancient India, it is essentially a technical guide, a scholarly treatise if you will, to sexual enjoyment and other sensual pleasures. It also contains profound historical and anthropological insights into the mores and customs of ancient India. The modern reader will often be surprised by how markedly different the cultural paradigms presented in the Kama Sutra are from those of today.

Almost nothing is known about the writer, Vatsyayana, or the exact date he wrote this work. Regarding the date, Sir Richard F. Burton (whose 1883 translation is used partially in this site—more on this below) determined from internal evidence that the Kama Sutra was written sometime between the first and sixth centuries A.D. Many scholars now believe the Kama Sutra was written during, or shortly before, the Gupta period (320-540 A.D.), which has also been called the Classical Age of India. Regarding the writer Vatsyayana, Burton makes the following insightful remarks

"...He [Vatsyayana] states that he wrote the work while leading the life of a religious student (probably at Benares) and while wholly engaged in the contemplation of the Deity. He must have arrived at a certain age at that time, for throughout he gives us the benefit of his experience, and of his opinions, and these bear the stamp of age rather than of youth; indeed the work could hardly have been written by a young man."

One comment should be made about the so-called "Kama Sutra" now available at various sites on the Internet. That text document, the so-called "sexual positions list" is only a very small snippet of the entire work (a portion of one chapter out of a total of 35 chapters plus a Salutation.) It is also not from the Burton translation.

Although legal considerations compel us to state that this site is For Adults Only (because Vatsyayana deals with the subject matter of human sexuality in a frank and forthright manner), it is a shame that this restriction must be applied since this site is clearly non-prurient in nature. The whole scholarly (and some would say, practical) character of the Kama Sutra is nothing like most works of erotica written today—some would even assert that the Kama Sutra is wholly appropriate even for older teens to read because of its historical and anthropological insights into our own culture and to human sexuality in general. Of course, our society is a lot different from ancient Indian society. Thus, many of the subjects and cultural practices Vatsyayana discusses are very alien, and even bizarre, to our frame of reference. But that is what makes the Kama Sutra so fascinating—something written almost two millennia ago, in a culture far removed us, tells us today that there is more than one way for a society to regulate human sexual practice and conduct. The obvious implication for us today is that we need to be very careful when we promote certain societal paradigms regarding human sexuality as somehow being fixed, absolute and timeless. They clearly are not.

Other Benefits of Light Therapy

Increasingly, light therapy is being used to reset our body clocks - sometimes along with melatonin and sometimes on its own-no matter how or why they've been put off track. Scientists are discovering that light therapy may have potential for treatment of several other disorders in addition to that of SAD.

Those suffering from this illness, find that they cannot sleep in the early morning. In a 1993 study conducted at South Australia, 9 persons who have suffered from early morning insomnia underwent bright-light stimulation in the evening. They were given photo therapy that involved exposure to 2,500 lux light from 10 p.m. to midnight. The result: They fell asleep at their normal times; but, stayed asleep an average of one and a half hours longer than usual.

A study in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada, clearly showed that students in classrooms with full-spectrum light had less absenteeism and had a higher academic-achievement than students in classes conducted under ordinary fluorescent lighting.

One type of insomnia involves a nightly inability to fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning. This often results in the abuse of alcohol and sleeping pills. It's called delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), or night-owl insomnia, and it usually develops during the teen years. Researchers blame it on having a maladjusted biological rhythm that doesn't say "good-night" until several hours past a normal bedtime.

In one study of people suffering from delayed sleep-phase syndrome, light therapy involving two hours of bright light exposure in the morning and then restriction from bright light in the evening hours, successfully altered the troubled sleepers' circadian rhythms. In addition, both sleep and morning alertness improved significantly during the treatment.

Some people have been able to avoid, or at least minimize the effect of, jet lag with light therapy. Experts recommend that if you are planning a trip eastward-to Europe, for example-you may want to try to get up a few hours earlier than normal on the day you intend to fly. Take a walk and soak up the sun, or stay inside with all the lights on. Stay awake and surround yourself with light. Then, once you arrive at your destination, try to stay outside in the sun for an hour or two. By doing so, you may be able to move your clock forward to more closely match the rhythm of life in the new time zone.

According to the National Commission of Sleep Disorders Research, people who work nights are two to five times more likely to fall asleep on the job and have accidents. Late-night sleepiness may impair the judgment of police, firefighters and ambulance drivers. In addition, a disturbing number of airline disasters have occurred in the wee hours.

In an analysis of ten studies involving nightshift workers, researchers found that the circadian rhythms of the subjects could be successfully shifted after bright light exposure at night and complete darkness during the day for four days. These shifts resulted in significant improvement in both alertness and cognitive performance during work hours. In addition, the workers were able to sleep an average of two hours longer during the day.

Later studies show that circadian rhythms of young subjects can be shifted more easily compared to middle aged subjects. In one study, the subjects slept well when given melatonin; but it did not improve their performance at work. The best performance improvement at work was found when subjects were exposed to bright light and asked to wear goggles when they are going home from work. The scientists speculated that the exposure to the morning sun may be affecting their circadian rhythm shift; and it can be prevented by wearing gloves. Most of studies seem to suggest that the workers performed better when they were exposed to the bright light treatment. To get the optimum effect, exposure of 3 hours was found to be all that is needed. There was no improvement when the subjects were exposed to 6 hours of bright light of 4000-6000 lux.

This binge/purge eating disorder typically develops in women during their teenage or early adult years. If bulimia remains untreated, it can cause serious physical and emotional problems. Some researchers have noted that bulimic episodes seem to occur most frequently in winter, leading to speculation that the illness might have a seasonal component. People who underwent high intensity light therapy had shown a remarkable improvement in this condition.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease-meaning that the immune system mistakes the body's own tissues for germs and attacks them. It strikes many more women than men and can cause a confusing array of symptoms, including fatigue, rashes, joint pains and kidney damage.
People with lupus are usually warned to avoid sunlight because it can aggravate their symptoms. But scientist have discovered that one type of ultraviolet sunlight, UVA - 1, helps relieve lupus symptoms.

Some10 to 15 million Americans are seriously depressed, and the suicide claims 30,000 lives a year. The success of light therapy in treating SAD has led to studies of its effectiveness for non-seasonal depression-with promising preliminary results.

The typical menstrual cycle lasts about a month, but some women's extend up to twice as long.
In a study, a number of women who suffered from prolonged menstrual cycles were asked to sleep with a 100 watt light on for five nights near the middle of their extended cycles. The result were amazing. Their cycles became shorter. Scientists speculate that the light might be affecting the regulation of female sex hormones. If so, phototherapy might one day be used to treat some cases of infertility.

Does the Human Body Conduct Light

When we studied optics in school, we learned about conductors and reflectors. Those that conduct light are called transparent objects; those that do not conduct or transmit light are called opaque. One of the signs of an opaque object is that it creates a shadow when it is struck by light. Our body is transparent to higher energy photons such as x-rays and laser. But, it is opaque to visible light (it produces shadow.) ; or is it?
A group of scientists under Prof. Kaznachejew conducted some unusual experiments at the Institute for clinical and Experimental Medicine, in Novosibirsk, USSR. They directed a focused beam of light into different parts of the human body. The objective was to measure the skin reaction to radiation in the visible light spectrum. They used a simple laboratory light, equipped with several light filters. During this experiment, the experimenters saw a strong light signal, a tiny speck of light, at a not illuminated area about 10 centimeters distant from the illuminated surface. To their surprise, they noticed that the spot of the light had spread under the human skin (the strength of the light signal was monitored by a photo-metric device, supported by a luminance microscope with a photo multiplier).
In order to understand this phenomena better and to better classify it, follow-up experiments were conducted with better equipment. They found that only certain parts of the body are able to conduct the light entering it. This "light sensitive regions" coincided with the well-known acupuncture points and meridians on the body surface The traditional Chinese defines 365 main acupuncture points (which actually are holes which provide access to the meridians or channels which control body's vital organs.Historically, acupuncture points were believed to be holes that allow entry into channels. These holes provide us gateways to influence, redirect, increase, or decrease body's vital substance, qi, thus correcting many of the imbalances.
The experiments at Novosibirsk did demonstrate that light will only propagate between points of the same acupuncture circuit. If the light source is moved by as little as 3-4 millimeters distant from the acupuncture point, the signal to the photomultiplier disappears at once. The light path through the human body was found to be dependent on the spectral range of the light used. The white light (a mixture of all colors) propagated the best , followed by red and blue. Green light had traveled the least.
If a living organism is exposed to visible light at the critical points, the light can travel immense distances within the body as shown in the
routing of the meridians. We may think of the meridians as a "light distribution system," similar to a fiber optics system used in modern communication systems. In a fiber optic channel, the light can travel even around bends and corners by bouncing and reflecting. If one accept this light conducting theory, then we can explain the claim made by some individuals that they can sense colors and differentiate texture just by touching!
Two American scientists, Dina F. Mandoley and Winslow R.Briggs, found that light can travel through plants They illuminated the end of a barley stem with red light of a helium-neon laser. They found that the barley stem conducted the light for a distance of 4.5 centimeters. The light was traced visually and with the aid of a photo multiplier at the dark end of the stem.
From these observations, it has been postulated that the living beings are sensitive to the changes in intensity of incident light. In fact, the light may have a profound influence on the cycles of life. The entire internal system of light guiding channels is adapted to the electromagnetic environment provided by the sun and is an additional aid to survival. It is also possible that the organism uses the light to sense the changes to its external environment and use it to regulate the function of different body parts. For instance, plants do not have a nervous system such as that present in animal and humans. So, the plants may be using these "light channels" as a pseudo nervous system. This can explain why a plant will die if it does not get enough sunlight (Of course, the plants cannot make their food in the absence of light.) Within the human organism, the inner light guide system is, perhaps, a remnant of a much older regulatory system, which was inherited from an earlier state of evolution from a time where nervous systems in living organism were either undeveloped or not in existence at all.
Many scientists believe that light entering through the retina of the eye is responsible for the coordination of the circadian rhythms in human beings. Recent research has shown, however, some blind person's circadian rhythm can be influenced by light therapy. If body can conduct light, as this research has shown, it may bring up a whole new aspect to the manipulation of circadian rhythm.

Shri Tara Devi yantra

In the centre [of the island of gems] is the wish fulfilling tree. Under this, a sadhaka should meditate on himself as being one with Tarini, as bright as the rising sun, the utmost sphere of light, in a place surrounded by beautiful maidens with fans and bells, wafted by a gentle breeze bearing the odour of scent and incense - Todala Tantra, IV
Tara is quite well known to the West through Her Tibetan manifestations, but some are unaware of the important position She occupies in the Hindu tantrik pantheon. She is the second of the ten Mahavidyas.
The major sources used on this page are an important Kaula tantra called Brihad Nila Tantra (see below) and the Tararahasya (Secrets of Tara) of Brahmananda Giri. The first deals with the exposition of Nila Sarasvati -- the Sapphire Blue Sarasvati. Sarasvati is the Brahma-Shakti, or spouse of the Supreme Deity in his Creative aspect. The other aspects are Vishnu and Mahesh -- all three symbolised in the three heads of
Lord Dattatreya, patron guru of the Natha tradition.
Some have attempted to separate the Hindu Tara from the Tibetan Tara, but there is little doubt that She is the same Devi. This is shown in a reference to Tara in the Hindu Tantrarajatantra, where Her mantra is given as Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha -- identical to the Tibetan version. Here Tara takes her form as Kurukulla.
The various other forms are given in Brihad Nila Tantra and
Devirahasya, under the names Nilasarasvati, Aniruddha Sarasvati, Ugra Tara, Tarini. Nilasarasvati gives as the fruit of worshipping Her poesy and eloquence. This, aside from clearly relating Nilasarasvati to White Sarasvati, also points to this Goddess being the Shakti of the Letters of the Alphabet, the Matrika Shakti.
She has an important role in Tantrik cosmology because mantra, words, music are considered to be the very source of the cosmos. As Matrika Shakti She deludes the entire human race with Her Maya of letters, and words. This has been expressed in a Tantrik form, but, practically speaking, it is sufficient to say that much hypnosis (Maya) comes about via the medium of words. Millions of people have lost their lives through this power.
Thus Her power and place in the Tantrik pantheon is quite justified, and Her mantra is described as a Siddha-Vidya, the cause of Maya and Englamouring. The background GIF here is the bija mantra of Sarasvati, Aim.
Abstract of Brihad Nila Tantra
Chapter One
The tantra opens with a request from Devi to
Mahakala Bhairava to reveal the Nila Tantra. Bhairava states that this tantra is the secret of all secrets and revealing it will cause lack of sccess. Having it in one's home is like having Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. It protects against all misfortunes and its specific virtue is that through it a person can become a miracle worker. It is the king of all tantras and is the core of the quintessence. Bhairava summarises its contents, which include daily worship (puja), the king of mantras, the rules of puja and preparation of its mantra, optional and occasional rites, the secrets of magical restraint, the rules of Kumari puja, hymns, meditations, how to become eloquent, rites of sacrifice (homa), the attainment of poesy, the secret sadhana, the secret mantra, alchemy, preparation of miraculous ashes (bhasma) and everything related to the six magical acts (satkarma).
Firstly, Bhairava deals with the Devi Tarini, which he says is a siddha vidya, causing Maya and englamouring. Her mantra is Om Hrim Strim Hum Phat. This vidya is said to be the heart of Nila Sarasvati. Its appliction is the attainment of poesy. It is to be pronounced facing north and meditated on as being like a lotus fibre extending from the base of the spine to the 1,000 petal lotus, like ten million fires, suns and moons.
Next the rules of bathing in the morning are described. Again, a sadhaka should face north, visualising the guru in the 1,000 petal lotus. Offering must be given to the rising sun. Then the
gayatri or twilight mantra of Tarini should be pronounced, which is given as Tarayai vidmahe mahograyai dhimahi tanno devi prachodayat.
Chapter Two
This covers the daily puja of Nila Sarasvati, in the usual way. It should be done in isolated places including cremation grounds, hills and forests. This puja also appears in the Todala Tantra, translated as part of the
Magic of Kali.
Chapter Three
Describes initiation and the characteristics of guru and disciple, as well as the right times for performing diksha (initiation).
Chapter Four
Contains a description of purashcharana, the method of preparing a mantra so that it becomes successful. Tara's rosary is made of human bone and must be purified and made carefully.
Chapter Five
Optional rites are the topic of this chapter, as well as the pithas or sacred spots. Kamarupa, where the yoni of the goddess fell after being sliced into fifty parts, is the most important.
Chapter Six
Covers Kumari Puja, the worship of a maiden. This is preceded by an offering to jackals, implying that the rite takes place in the cremation ground (shmashana). As in the
Kulachadamani Tantra, there is reference to the eight Kula trees, which must also receive their share of worship. A day is the same as a year. Wine must be used when worshipping Kalika but has to be purified first, because Shukra placed it under a curse.
Chapter Seven
Covers the satkarma, or six magical acts, as well as worship of the kumaris. A most interesting section deals with Maha China Krama, which is, essentially left hand tantra (vamachara). The rule here is that of Svecchachara, the path of acting according to one's own will. In this, there is no need for external worship. All can be performed mentally. There are no rules as to the time the puja should be performed, no rules about the place, no need for preparation. The conjunction of yoni and lingam is the essence of the rite. During intercourse, the partners should mentally recite the Tara mantra. It should be performed in the cremation ground.
Chapter Eight
Describes the yantra of Tara (see above). In the centre she and Mahakala are in sexual union. The yantra should be engraved on copper, smeared with kundagola and svayambhu flowers (menstrual blood) and scents including camphor. The practitioner meditates in the heart on Tarini and then draws her, by vital breath, using a flower, into the centre of the yantra.
She is then considered to be present in the yantra and various offerings (upacharas) are dedicated to her and to her attendants in the different parts.
Chapter Nine
Heroic worship is the subject of this chapter, which I have translated on the site.
Vira Sadhana.
Chapter Ten
