What is Magnet Therapy ?

Looked on by many today as a popular form of alternative medicine, magnetic therapy actually dates back more than four thousand years ago to the pharaohs of ancient Egypt and the oldest medical texts in China, India, Israel and Greece. Well-entrenched currently in China, Japan, India, Austria and Germany as a method for alleviating pain and promoting healing, magnetic therapy has only gained acceptance in the United States within the past few years. To explain magnetic therapy in layman's terms: think of the body as a dynamic organism that consists of individual "electrical" cells. Each cell has a positive charge at its nucleus, and a negative charge at its outer membrane. When the polarities are equal, the body is able to function at its optimal level. However, if exposed continuously to excessive static electricity due to weather fluctuations, household electrical devices and various environmental stimuli, the body becomes inundated with positive ions. This imbalance can result in tiredness and fatigue, headaches and migraines, insomnia, muscle and joint pain, varicose veins and other ailments of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems. Magnets can help the body correct this imbalance, as evinced by ample evidence suggesting that seven out of ten magnet users experience beneficial results. There are two types of fixed magnets: unipolar and bipolar. Unipolar magnets, such as those offered by MagicBelt.com, have a positive charge on one end (biomagnetic south pole) and a negative charge on the other (biomagnetic north pole). This "unidirectional", or concentration on only one direction, assures an optimal depth of penetration. Bipolar magnets, on the other hand, have repeated north and south polarities on the same side of the magnet, which can ultimately cancel out, or at least weaken, each other's magnetic fields. Placing the magnet against the body is critical, both in terms of promoting healing and minimizing adverse effects. The newly increased blood flow now enables the body to begin the self-healing process which, in turn, can promote relief from chronic pain, discomfort and stress; decreased swelling and inflammation; energy enhancement; accelerated healing of fractures; increased immune function in warding off viruses; and the reduction or reversal of many of the ailments mentioned above. In a nutshell it allows the body to perform at its optimum level. Note that magnets in and of themselves do not claim to heal the body. Nor should they be used exclusively for any major disease or medical condition. Rather, as an adjunctive therapy, magnets stimulate the body to heal itself by helping increase circulation, improve energy levels, and provide oxygen to body cells - thereby enabling them to exist at their ideal, natural levels. Results vary from person to person, and depend on the magnets used as well as the depth and duration of the individual's specific medical condition. In general, the effectiveness of magnetic therapy hinges on four factors: magnet strength, thickness, number of magnets used and spacing. Here is how our Neodymium Iron Boron Rare Earth magnets compare to those used by our competitors, as evinced by independent studies recently conducted by Magnetic Instrumentation, Inc., of Indianapolis, Indiana: · Magnet strength: The strength of a magnet is measured in units of gauss (a unit of measuring the intensity of magnetic flux). While the strength of a magnet transmitted to the wearer may actually be less at the skin's surface than at its core, one with a gauss reading of more than 500 and a penetration level of 4 inches is considered powerful. The magnets used in our MagicBelt.com belts and hats boast a tremendous 40,000 gauss reading. · Thickness: Basically, the thicker the magnet, the greater the depth of penetration. However, you don't want them to be too thick, or they'll be awkward to wear. Our 1/8" -thick magnets comfortably permit a 5" penetration - the highest currently recognized in the industry. · Number of magnets: For optimum results, magnets should be tightly grouped together - while not touching each other - for maximum field strength and penetration. The more magnets used, the greater their therapeutic potential. We place our magnets approximately ¼" apart, allowing us to use 20 magnets in the same area in which leading competitors can only fit 15. · Spacing: There should also be a relatively thin (1/8" to ¼") pad between the magnets and the skin's surface. This spacing not only makes the magnet more comfortable to wear, it also levels out any bumpiness in the magnetic field. Our magnets have a 1/4 inch spacing. Research studies within the past two years have supported the use of magnetic therapy. An article in the January 31, 1999 issue of USA Weekend revealed that four major medical institutions had conducted clinical trials in the field of magnetic therapy - with very promising results. At the Baylor College of Medicine, placing a magnet over a pain trigger point in post-polio patients provided prompt pain relief, while 80 to 90 percent of patients at Vanderbilt University Medical Center found relief from pain due to sports injuries or accidents. Tufts University of Medicine discovered that magnets helped relieve fibromyalgia pain, and diabetics at the New York Medical College at Valhalla experienced a decrease in foot pain. Since magnetic therapy is still a relatively new and as yet unproven form of alternative healing in the United States, further studies will no doubt be conducted. In the meantime, the general consensus is that magnets, if used properly, certainly can't hurt the body … and in most cases, can help.

Herbal Medicine and Food Therapy

"Medicine and food are of the same sauce", the Neijing says. When the Chinese discovered farming and agriculture in the early days, they discovered the medicinal properties of food. Since then, food has been studied and analyzed for its medicinal effects on people. This knowledge enables people to use food as the first line of defense to ward off common sicknesses and diseases. It is only when food alone cannot solve the health problem that people seek the help from medical practitioners. When treating sickness, Chinese doctors use herbal remedies initially to control the problem. They apply tried-and-true formulas with slight variations to meet the patient's specific conditions. Mixing herbs of similar properties increases the overall effectiveness. Mixing herbs of different properties can moderate the effects of the main herbs, complement the actions and/or minimize any adverse side effects. Some herbs can be as harsh as drugs, very forceful and effective but not to be taken continuously.Herbal medicine comes from plants, animals and minerals sources. Plant sources are roots, stalk, and bark, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds of wild vegetation. Some can only be found in extreme climates and mountainous terrain. Animal sources include insects, marine products and game. Mineral sources include crushed stones, fossilized bones and crushed shells. Herbal remedies are mostly decocted into teas, to be taken warm and are very bitter in taste. They are used to control and treat the predominant symptoms of sickness. Once the sickness is under control, food therapy is used to continue the treatment. This combination of foods and herbs to make medicinal dishes to treat sickness is food therapy. When herbs of similar, supporting or enhancing natures are added to food, they intensify the medicinal effects. When herbs of opposing natures are added, they lower the impact or change the effects on the body. Therapeutic foods are designed to assist the body in healing itself for permanent cure. The herbs used are superior herbs or food herbs with little or no adverse side effects.Medicinal food is most effective when taken regularly for a few days or up to a few weeks. Patients going through the treatment gain a better understanding of their body's systems and know what to eat to prevent future reoccurrence. Some simple therapeutic recipes have become popular family dishes and the more precious ones are delicacies in Chinese cuisine.

YANTRA literally means "support" and "instrument". A YANTRA is a geometric design acting as a highly efficient tool for contemplation, concentration and meditation. YANTRAS carry spiritual significance : there is a specific meaning that pertains to higher levels of consciousness.
The YANTRA provides a focal point that is a window into the absolute. When the mind is concentrated on a single, simple object (in this case a YANTRA), the mental chatter ceases. Eventually, the object is dropped when the mind can remain empty and silent without help. In the most advanced phases, it is possible to attain union with God by the geometric visualization of a YANTRA.
The YANTRA is like a microcosmic picture of the
MACROCOSM. It is a focusing point and an outer and inner doorway. The YANTRAS are often focused on a specific deity and so. by tuning into the different YANTRAS you can tap into certain deities or creative force centers in the universe.
YANTRAS are usually designed so that the eye is carried into the center, and very often they are symmetrical. They can be drawn on paper, wood, metal, or earth, or they can be three-dimensional.
The most celebrated YANTRA in India is the
Sri YANTRA, the YANTRA of Tripura Sundari. It is a symbol of the entire cosmos that serves to remind the practitioner of the nondifference between subject and object.
How do YANTRAS work ?At the basis of YANTRA operation is something called "shape energy" or "form energy". The idea is that every shape emits a very specific frequency and energy pattern. Examples of old believes in shape energy are the YANTRAS and mandalas of eastern philosophies, the star of David, the five pointed star (pentagon), the Christian cross, the pyramids and so on. Certain 'powers' are ascribed to the various shapes. Some have 'evil' or negative energies and some 'good' or positive energies, but in YANTRA
Yoga only the benefic and harmonious energies are used.
When one focuses on a YANTRA, his mind is atomatically "tuned in" by
RESONANCE into the specific form energy of that YANTRA. The process of RESONANCE is then maintained and amplified. The YANTRA acts only as a "tune in" mechanism or a doorway. The subtle energy does not come from the YANTRA itself, but from the MACROCOSM.
Basically YANTRAS are secret keys for establishing RESONANCE with the benefic energies of the MACROCOSM. Very often the YANTRAS can put us in contact with extremely elevated energies and entities, being of invaluable help on the spiritual path.
YANTRAS are poorly known in the OccidentAt this moment, there is little known about YANTRAS in the Western world. Many people consider them just pretty pictures and some artists claim to draw "YANTRAS" from their imagination. They are very far from the true meaning and use of YANTRAS. First of all, YANTRAS cannot simply be invented from imagination. Every specific mood and emotion has an associated form energy and shape. This unequivocally determines the form of the YANTRA associated to that mood. The traditional YANTRAS were discovered through revelation, by clairvoyance, not invented. One needs to be a true spiritual master, a
tantric guru, to be able to reveal a new YANTRA to the world.
Search the Internet and the libraries and you will find very little consistent knowledge about YANTRAS. Some people placed YANTRAS upside down, a monument of their ignorance. You cannot place a YANTRA just any way you please. Anyone knows that when the cross is held upside down, it is no longer a benefic symbol. A YANTRA put upside down is no longer the same YANTRA.
"Disecting" a YANTRAThe power of YANTRAS to induce RESONANCE is based on the SPECIFIC FORM of its appearance. Such a diagram can be composed from one or more geometrical shapes which combine into a precise model representing and
transfiguring in essence, at the level of the physical universe, the subtle sphere of force corresponding to the invoked deity. From this point of view we can argue that the YANTRA functions similarly to a MANTRA (sacred word). By RESONANCE, a certain energy from the practitioner's MICROCOSM vibrates on the same wavelength with the corresponding infinite energy present in the MACROCOSM, energy which is represented in the physical plane by the YANTRA. The principle of RESONANCE with any deity, cosmic power, aspect, phenomenon or energy owes its universal applicability to the perfect correspondence existing between the human being (seen as a true MICROCOSM) and the Creation as a whole (MACROCOSM).
The Yantric ContourEvery YANTRA is delimited from the exterior by a line or a group of lines forming its perimeter. These marginal lines have the function to maintain, contain and prevent the loss of the magical forces represented by the core structure of the YANTRA, usually the central dot. They also have the function to increase its magical and subtle force.
The core of the YANTRA is composed of one or several simple geometrical shapes : dots, lines, triangles, squares, circles and lotuses representing in different ways the subtle energies.
The Dot (BINDU)For example the dot (BINDU) signifies the focalized energy and its intense concentration. It can be evnisaged as a kind of energy deposit which can in turn radiate energy under other forms. The dot is usually surrounded by different surfaces, either a triangle, a hexagon, a circle etc. These forms depend on the characteristic of the deity or aspect represented by the YANTRA. In the tantric iconography, the dot is named BINDU; in
tantra BINDU is symbolically considered to be SHIVA himself, the source of the whole creation.
The Tiangle (TRIKONA)The triangle (TRIKONA) is the symbol of
SHAKTI, the feminine energy or aspect of Creation. The triangle pointing down represents the YONI, the feminine sexual organ and the symbol of the supreme source of the Universe, and when the triangle is pointing upwards it signifies intense spiritual aspiration, the sublimation of one's nature into the most subtle planes and the element of fire (AGNI TATTVA). The fire is always oriented upwards, thus the correlation with the upward triangle - SHIVA KONA. On the other hand, the downward pointing triangle signifies the element of water which always tends to flown and occupy the lowest possible position. This triangle is known as SHAKTI KONA.
The intersection of two geometric forms (lines, triangles, circles, etc.) represents forces that are even more intense than those generated by the simple forms. Such an interpenetration indicates a high level in the dynamic interaction of the correspondent energies. The empty spaces generated by such combinations are described as very efficient operational fields of the forces emanating from the centeral point of the YANTRA. That is why we can very often encounter representations of MANTRAS in such spaces. YANTRA and MANTRA are complementary aspects of SHIVA and their use together is much more efficient than the use of one alone.
The Six Points Star (SHATKONA)A typical combination often found in the graphical structure of a YANTRA is the superposition of two triangles, one pointing upwards and the other downwards, forming a star with six points (SHATKONA), also known as David's Star. This form symbolically represents the union of
PURUSHA and PRAKRITI or SHIVA-SHAKTI, without which there could be no Creation.
The Circle (
CHAKRA)Another simple geometrical shape often used in YANTRAS is the circle, representing the rotation, a movement closely linked to the shape of spiral which is fundamental in the Macrocosmic evolution. At the same time, the circle represents perfection and the blissful creative void. In the series of the five fundamental elements it represents air (VAYU TATTVA).
The Square (BHUPURA)Between the simple geometrical elemets that compose YANTRAS there is also the sqaure (BHUPURA). The square is usually the exterior limit of the YANTRA and symbolically, it represents the element earth (PRITHIVI TATTVA).
Every YANTRA starts from the center, often marked by a central dot (BINDU) and ends with the outer square. This represents the sense of universal evolution, starting from the subtle and ending with the coarse, starting from "ether" and ending with "earth".
Even tough most of the times YANTRAS are composed of these simple geometrical shapes, sometimes we encounter other elements such as arrow points, tridents, swords, spikes included in the design of a YANTRA with the purpose of representing vectors and directions of action for the YANTRIC energies.
The Lotus (PADMA)The lotus symbol (or its petals) is both a symbol of purity and variety, every lotus petal representing a distinct aspect. The inclusion of a lotus in a YANTRA represents freedom from multiple interference with the exterior (purity) and expresses the absolute force of the Supreme Self.
In conclusion, a YANTRA is a very complex spiritual instrument in the tantric practice (
SADHANA). It can calm and focus the activities of the mind, and by its positive auto-suggestion it has a benefic impact on the health and psychic well being of a person.
A YANTRA alone represents nothing. Only when it is awakened by mental concentration and meditation will the process of RESONANCE appear and the benefic macrocosmic energies will manifest themselves in the practitioner's MICROCOSM.
How to Use YANTRASAs we showed above, the secret key to using YANTRAS in meditation is RESONANCE. The process of RESONANCE is established by mental focus on the image of the YANTRA. As long as the mind is tuned into the specific mood associated to that YANTRA, the energy flows, but when the RESONANCE is stopped, the energy disappears.
Instructions for YANTRA meditation :
· hang the YANTRA on a wall facing North or East, placing the center of the YANTRA at the level of your eyes
· adopt your favorite posture or, if you want, sit on a chair maintaining your spine straight
· breath in through the nose and out through the mouth, but do not force at all, just let the breath flow normally
· look into the center of the YANTRA, trying to blink as rarely as possible; you don't want to look at the particular details of the YANTRA, just keep your sight right in the center and observe the whole YANTRA at once
· this exercise should last at least 15-30 minutes every day; the experience will be indescribable
· in time, after at least seven days of YANTRA meditation you will be able to tap into the same yantric energy even without a YANTRA (at the beginning you may fix your sight on an exterior or imaginary point or evoke the YANTRA with your eyes closed)
· do not forget to
consecrate the fruits of this practice to God (karma yoga); you should not chase any objective when doing YANTRA meditation, just let it gradually guide you towards the sublime energies of the MACROCOSM
· when executing this techniques it is recommended that we maintain a state of aspiration and intense longing for experiencing the beatific energies of the consciousness
· in superior phases the YANTRA absorbs the practitioner's complete attention, and he can no longer tell if the YANTRA is within himself or if he is within the YANTRA; this is the state of nonduality.

Narayan Kavach of yantra

The Narayan Kavach appears in the sixth ‘skandh’ of the eighth ‘adhyaaya’ verses 36-46 in the Shrimad Bhaagvad. The Narayan Kavach was taught by Vishvaroopa to Lord Indra.

Narayan Kavach literally means the armor of Lord Narayan. An armor protects one from blows and adversities. That is exactly what this prayer is meant to do.
It is a fascinating prayer as you will learn if you, at least will read the translation that is rendered. All the possible situations, times, circumstances are covered. The more ambitious ones could recite it everyday for themselves or/and their loved ones. It is believed to be very powerful. I would recommend that the ‘less ambitious ones’ recite or learn the last 4 lines.
From ‘Vidikshu dikshu…….samast tejaha’
Before commencing the recital, chant ’Om Namo Naraayanaya’ or ‘Om Namo Bhagvadey Vaasudey Vaaya (‘ey’ pronounced as Whey) or your favourite mantra 12 times.
Visualize yourself and/or your loved ones, totally protected. My favourite way of doing it is by visualizing a family portrait. You could ‘see’ them dressed in an armor. You could see them immersed in white or violet light. You could see them in a tube of Light. You could see an impenetrable ring of white Light around them.
‘Sound’ started with the chanting of Om. The entire SamVeda was transferred through the notes of the ‘sargam’ Music commenced with the recitation of Mantras and Shlokas. There is Spiritual strength in it.
(One must remember that this prayer was granted for Victory in the battlefield. Hence it asks for destruction of enemies, I would prefer to pray for the destruction of enmity rather than the enemies, Shakun)
I am presenting to you the translation first. The original follows:
May the Lord Hari protect you from all sides.
Shree Hari has placed His ‘Charan Kamal’ (Lotus feet)
On the back of Shree Garuda (The vehicle of Lord Vishnu)
All the 8 ‘Siddhis’ (Miraculous Powers) serve Him..
On His 8 hands, He Holds 8 weapons.
(Shankh, Chakra, Dhaal, Talvaar, Gada, Baan, Dhanush and Paash)
May the Lord protect me in the water as Matsya-Murtir (The Fish Incarnation of Lord Vishnu) from all the Water Creatures.
May the Lord protect me from the Fury of Typhoons.
On the Earth, may the Lord Vaaman (Incarnation of Lord Vishnu) protect me.
Lord Trivikrama should protect me in the sky.
May Lord Narasimha (The half-Man and Half-Lion Incarnation of Lord Vishnu) by whose Mighty roar, all the four directions shook, and pregnant demonesses lost their children in their wombs, protect me in forts, jungles, battlefields and dangerous places.
May Varaaha (The Boar Incarnation of Lord Vishnu) who saved the earth with the help of His tusk, and who symbolises ‘Yagna’ (Sacrifice, effort) protect me when I am going my way.
May Parshurama (The Incarnation of Lord Vishnu who cleansed the earth of power hungry corrupt warriors), protect me on mountain-peaks.
May Sri Laxman, together with Sri Bharat’s elder brother Shri Ram, protect me whenever I travel.
May the Lord Narayan protect me from wrong thoughts, deeds (whenever I may act against ‘Dharma’, my duties)
May the ‘Rishi Shreshta’ protect me from (the disease of ) the Human ego.
Lord Dattatreya! Please protect me from the obstacles that one generally encounters when one goes to pray, or for Spiritual gatherings.
May the Lord Kapil protect me from the bondage of karmas.
May Sanat Kumara protect me from the God of Passion.
May HayaSheersha, protect me from the offense of not paying obeisance to the Dev Murtis (Temples) that one encounters on the way.
May the Dev-Rishi Naarad protect me from (‘Seva-Apraadh) My shortcomings in service (to the Celestial Beings).
May the Tortoise Avtaar of the Lord protect me from all kinds of health problems.
May the Lord Dhanvantari protect me from unhealthy food items.
May RishabhDev protect me from ‘dualities’ (ie. Joy, sorrow, pleasure, pain, Like, Dislike etc)
May Yagna Bhagwan (The Lord Of Yagna or Sacrifices) protect me from social stigmas.
May Lord Sheshya (Snake) protect me from all kinds of snakes of anger.
May Ved- Vyaasji protect me from ignorance.
May Lord Buddha protect me from hypocrisy and laziness.
May Lord Kalki protect me from all the evil prevalent in Kaliyuga.
May Lord Keshav protect me in the morning with His ‘Gada’ (weapon)
May Lord Govind protect me with His flute after dawn.
Before noon may Lord Narayana protect me with His strength.
At noon, may Lord Vishnu protect me with His Sudarshan Chakra (weapon)
During the afternoon, may Lord Madhusudan protect me with His Mighty ‘Dhanush’ (weapon, Bow)
May Tri-Murti-Dhaari protect me during the evening.
After sunset may Lord Rishikesh protect me.
At midnight I seek protection from Bhagwan Padmanaabha.
After midnight may Shree Hari protect me.
At Dawn may Bhagwan Janaardan, who holds the sword protect me.
Before Sunrise may Shree Damodara protect me.
And may Bhagwan Vishweshwara also protect me.
O Sudarshan (weapon of the Lord) You appear like a wheel of a chariot.
Your edges are sharp like a devastating fire.
By instructions from Your Lord, you move on all sides
Just like fire, with the help of the wind, burns dry grass,
Similarly you destroy the army of my enemies (enmity).
O Gada! (weapon) the sparks that emanate from you, are unbearable to the touch.
You are the beloved of Lord Ajit (Invincible)
Hence you destroy the evil spirits as well as my enemies (enmity).
O Shankha! (Conch) May my enemies (and evil tendencies) get frightened, when they hear your sound as Lord Krishna blows upon you.
Make their hearts tremble and cause the demons and evil spirits to flee.
O Mighty Talvaar (Sword) of the Lord whose edge is so sharp.
You destroy my enemies (enmity)
O Great Dhaal of the Lord, which is adorned with countless moons,
You forever close the eyes of my sinful enemies (evil, enmity)
May all those (that) be destroyed, who (which is, an) are an obstacle to my well being.
May all my enemies (enmity) be destroyed by the strength of my chanting and prayers.
May the Lord’s name, form, vehicle and helpers protect our intellect, mind, breath and senses.
God is in reality the ‘Action’ and the ‘Reason for all Creation’
By the Strength of the above Truth, may all my obstacles cease to exist.
Those who have realised ‘Brahma’ or become Enlightened, have realised that the Lord is without form.
Yet by the Power of the Lord’s ‘Maya’ it is true, that the Lord does assume an appearance, and owns (acquires) Jewels, Weapons, Attributes.
That is why, may the Omni- Present God Shree Hari always protect me with His Form.
May the Lord NaraSimha ( The Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Half Lion, Half Man) , Whose Mighty Roar, makes flee the fear of everyone, and by whose effulgence, (enemy's) brightness is devoured, May He always protect me.

What Is Homeschooling And How Do I know If It's Right For My Family?

Do you know what these famous people have in common?
Alexander Graham Bell
George Patton
Albert Einstein
Benjamin Franklin
Winston Churchill
Agatha Christie
George Bernard Shaw
Will Rogers
If you guessed that they were all homeschoolers, you'd be correct. This is a very short list of famous and successful people who were educated at home. If you would like to expand this list, do a search on the Internet for ?famous homeschoolers.? There are many websites that list these people and some provide detailed biographies. There is even a book called, aptly, ?Famous Homeschoolers,? by Nancy and Malcolm Plant. (
http://www.fun-books.com/specials.htm)
The point here is to get into the mindset that people can be educated and become successful adults without attending public school. And because I can almost ?hear? what you are thinking, no, it is not necessary to have a high school diploma to go to college.
So what is homeschooling? In the broadest sense, homeschooling is educating your children at home. You, as parent, become teacher. Parents homeschool for more reasons than you can imagine. Some want to avoid having their children exposed to violence and peer pressure. Some homeschool so that they can make sure their children's education adheres to their religious beliefs. Some live a different lifestyle?perhaps they travel a lot?and want their children's schooling to be flexible enough to fit around that life style. And some, like me, simply enjoy being with their children. They don't want the public school to interrupt and weaken the parent/child bond that they have been working hard to create for the first five years of their child's life.
Just as there are many reasons to homeschool, there are many methods of homeschooling. All the way from ?un-schooling? (learning by doing, learning from life, not using textbook type materials) to ?school at home? (using textbooks at desks set up in a schoolroom at home) and everything in between. It's very easy to find hundreds of homeschool Websites by using a search engine, but just to get you started, try:
Jon's Homeschool Resource Page
http://www.midnightbeach.com/hs/
When I decided to write this article, I thought hard about what I could offer that wasn't being displayed on thousands of Websites on the Internet. I realized that the only thing I have to offer anyone interested in homeschooling is?my experience. So everything in the article below comes from my fifteen years of experience homeschooling my four youngest children. I hope it is of some use to you.
Deciding to homeschool your child may be one of the most important decisions you ever make as a parent, and it will take a lot of thought and soul searching. To the newcomer, it may seem impossible, overwhelming and very, very lonely. But like most huge obstacles, once it's broken down into smaller pieces, it becomes manageable. We'll take it one step at a time, in small enough chunks to get a hold of. So, if you're game, roll up your sleeves and let's get to work figuring out if homeschooling is for you and your child.
First things first. Organization is the key. Get a three-ring binder (homeschooling parent's LOVE three-ring binders) and put a label on the front. (If you've made the transition to digital record keeping, you can just start a folder on the computer. But it's not as much fun.) Label it something serious, like ? My Homeschooling Plans? or ?Homeschooling Thoughts.? Put some paper in the binder, find a really comfortable ink pen, and sit down somewhere quiet.
Ready? Good. Now, let's get started.
What are your reasons for considering homeschooling? Even if you haven't actually made the decision to homeschool, the fact that you are here reading this article says you are curious. Perhaps you honestly don't know the answer yet?and that's ok. The remainder of this article is going to try to help you start to find those answers.
Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, but each state has it's own set of laws that must be followed. Compulsory (how I hate that word) education here in Washington State starts at the age of 8. Even though I had been homeschooling him from birth, to stay legal once my son reached 8-years old, I was required to become ?certified.? That meant I either had to have two years of college education, or take a ?certification class.? I met this requirement by taking an independent correspondence class, during which I was asked to put on paper my goals, philosophies and reasons for wanting to homeschool. I'd like to help you do the same right now.
Start a page--either the ?tree? kind or a file on the computer?and title it ?My Educational Beliefs.? List what personal beliefs you have about education?especially the education of your own children. Get as detailed as you can here--the value is in the thinking process behind the list. Take your time, I'm in no hurry.
As an example to get you started, I'm going to share with you what I wrote on my list nine years ago.
My Educational Beliefs
1. I believe my child's attitude about learning should be:
One of continual curiosity and seeking of knowledge.
2. I believe my child's learning should lead towards a lifestyle that is:
Rural, physically active, creative.
3. I believe these basic values should be part of my child's learning:
Respect for others
Loyalty to family and friends
Honesty
Generosity
4. I believe children learn best:
Through hands-on learning experience, reading, workbooks.
5. I believe a teacher should:
Provide side-by-side assistance and direction.
Interact with the child.
Provide the structure within which the child may explore, experiment, study and achieve.
Provide a good example of excitement in learning.
6. Other beliefs:
I believe my child should grow up to be self-reliant and occupationally secure in a field of high interest to them.
Now, that wasn't too bad, was it? Don't give up on this until you have at least something written down, but don't agonize over it either. You can come back to it later if need be. Next, start a paper or file titled ?Life Goals For My Child.?
I want you to write down what kind of person you envision your child being as an adult. What are your hopes and dreams for him/her? What educational gifts do you hope to be able to help them find that will serve them their entire lives?
I'll share mine from 9 years ago, just to get you started.
?Life Goals for My Child?
7. Be literate.
8. Be self-reliant.
9. Compete well in their chosen field of occupation.
10. Appreciate art, music, and literature.
11. Be creative.
12. Be inventive and resourceful.
13. Be healthy, mentally and physically.
14. Co-operate with others.
15. Maintain a strong sense of self-worth.
16. Maintain a life-long curiosity, seeking knowledge as a way of life.
17. Look to the future with a sense of excitement and adventure.
For the last exercise, start a third paper titled: Why We (I) Am Going To Homeschool Our (My) Child? (Yes, single parents can successfully homeschool their children.) You may not have all the answers for this one yet either, but just get something down. All of these ideas and beliefs can start getting mixed in with other people's opinions once we start educating ourselves in depth about homeschooling, and you'll be glad you have these lists tucked away.
Okay, here's my old list:
Why We Are Going To Homeschool Our Children
Our family consists of myself, my husband, a 21-year-old daughter, a 19-year-old daughter, an 8-year-old son, a 7-year-old daughter, a 4-½ year old daughter, and an unborn son due in 6 months. My two oldest daughters (from my first marriage) were in the public school system for the whole of their educational years. It is largely a dissatisfaction with the public schools and all it's attendant problems (academic, social, and moral) that has caused us to make the decision to homeschool our youngest children. We decided, even before our 8-year-old son (the oldest of the younger set) was born, that somehow we would find an alternative to the public schools.
We want to homeschool for some additional reasons. We want added closeness with our children. We want more independence, greater control over our family's moral and philosophical values, and better awareness of our children's interests.
We dislike the thought of any government agency--no matter how well meaning--directing the raising of our children.
We intend to homeschool because we do not want our children's academic, social, and moral education taken out of our hands.
We believe these areas of a child's education are a parent's responsibility, right, and pleasure.
I'd like you to spend some time going over these lists until you feel they accurately reflect your feelings about homeschooling your children. When I did these exercises, I had only a vague idea about why I wanted to homeschool and what kind of education I wanted to help my children acquire. These simple exercises helped me to ?solidify? my ideas and provided the basis for our future homeschooling methods. I hope they help you to do the same. Keep these lists in a safe place and add to them as you explore the possibility of homeschooling your child.

The Food Pyramid

Just a few calories ago, the government revised the food pyramid. You can see it at http://www.mypyramid.gov/
It has a snazzy new logo with a stick figure dashing up the Steps To a Healthier You on the side of the pyramid. It’s supposed to be in better tune with our complicated modern life, the latest Scientific Thought, and reflect a customized pyramid which better fits our lifestyle, not that there’s anything wrong with that. They have an animation, a mini-poster for the art-impaired, and, “a wealth of ideas to help you get started to a healthier diet.”
In better tune – with modern life? Then why a pyramid? Isn’t that Egypto-elitist? Doesn’t that perhaps reflect a suspect cash infusion from the travel industry? How many people will EVER run up a pyramid? And if they do, why aren’t they carrying a six pack of bottled water? “Water, the Almost Food.” Because the water lobby is weak, that’s why.
See, that’s what’s wrong with government – no big thinkers. All around us we see sellouts and commercialization: Product placement; Endorsements; Co-promotions; Synergism! But does the government see this? Noooo. Instead of cribbing money from this or that entitlement program, why not some good old entrepreneurship in our leadership! What do you think McDonalds would pay to have that stickfigure run up the GOLDEN ARCHES?
But I wonder if the department of food thought this through? There could be a stickfigure of a mom in a stick minivan (note: sell van logo) or a guy carrying a laptop (note: sell computer logo) racing to catch a train (note: place Amtrak logo), while talking on his cellphone (note: sell cellphone logo). Boggles the mind, doesn’t it? THINK of the monetization possibilities which could all go to reducing the budget deficit!
And while we are free-thinking here, why not go wild and sell advertising space on the one, five and ten dollar bill? Some court is going to strike down In God We Trust anyway. Consider: “Reach Out and Touch Someone – AT&T.” Wouldn’t they pay a billion for umpteen gazillion impressions? And here’s the best part – those bills have a limited lifetime. The treasury is ALWAYS taking old worn out ones out of the supply and printing new ones. How many OTHER advertisers would wait in LINE? What do you think Target would pay to replace that odd eye and triangle with the Target logo bullseye? And why show an old building on the rear of the $10? Why not show the latest Las Vegas resort? Keep the Eagle. What do you think PETSMART would pay for a little banner?
But back to the Food Pyramid. Why not monetize “calories”? What would McDonalds pay to change the word to “McNutrients?”
Of course, we’d need an Office of Promotional Tie-In. I think $500,000,000 would get it kick started. Hey, why do we need zeros? They could just as well be tiny Target logos.

Staying in Sydney Hotels on a Shoestring Budget

Parenting Rules for Permissive Parents: Use These with Caution

I remember a childless couple who slept with their dogs. They were clearly uncomfortable with the situation. Yet every night their dogs crawled into bed with them.
During the day the two black labs ran through the house, climbed on the furniture, and regularly ate human food from the hands of their masters. Did you know some parents treat their kids like this couple treated their dogs? Let’s find out how.
Recently, my own Yellow Lab, Chum, had knee surgery. While sitting in the waiting room, I noticed this sign on the doctor’s wall.
Dog Rules:
The dog is Not allowed in the house.
Okay, the dog is allowed in the house, but Only in certain rooms.
Alright, the dog is allowed in all rooms, but has to Stay Off the furniture.
Well, okay, the dog can get on the old furniture Only.
Fine, the dog is allowed on all the furniture, but is Not Allowed to sleep on the bed.
Okay, the dog is allowed on the bed, but Only by invitation.
The dog can sleep on the bed anytime, but Not Under the covers.
Okay, the dog can sleep under the covers every night.
Humans Must Ask permission to sleep under the covers with the dogs.
So what’s the problem? Could it be that the Dog Rules, really meant that The Dogs Ruled? How does this apply to parents?
The inconsistent or permissive parent treats their kids a lot like these dogs. When parents state what they expect and then give in to the demands of their kids, parents trample their own authority and let their kids rule.
If this is happening in your house, you need to change and you can change! Why do you need to change?
Because being consistent gives your child:
A sense of being loved
A feeling of security
Respect for you
Self-discipline
A likable personality
How can you change? First, you must decide to change. Second, follow the 5 rules listed below.
5 Consistent Rules:
1. Think wisely before you speak. 2. If you say “No,” mean it. 3. Use a firm voice. 4. Use few words. 5. No arguing.
The Wrap-Up:
The couple with the black labs changed their own behavior.
The dogs went to the dog house.
The couple enjoyed sleeping in their bed alone.
Being consistent is one of the best ways to show love.
If you’re inconsistent, you can change.
By following the 5 Consistent Rules listed above, you'll be kind and firm, show love, and be a character builder too. Here's to your consistent success!

Copying XBOX Games

There really is no shortcut to copying XBOX games. In fact, this is a mightily complicated process and has stumped some really techie people. This is evident with the prevalence of the question on copying XBOX games in Internet message boards and tech chat rooms. But why does one need to be going about there and copying XBOX games? Is this not legal?
If you have an XBOX and you have purchased original games to play on it, chances are you must have ran through a huge chunk of your savings. Original games are very expensive and because CDs are not exactly immortal, you can eventually wear out a game especially if you use it every minute of the day.
To give value to consumers, most countries allow original CD buyers to make back-up copies of their XBOX games in case their original got damaged or got lost provided that they are aware of the law against pirated software and that they actually own an original cd and are only copying XBOX games for their personal use only.
While it is relatively easy to do the copying of XBOX games, the same cannot be said in actually using the XBOX games that you have copied. Most software contain an encryption that must be met when inserted in an XBOX. Copying an XBOX game, however, does not copy this encryption. This is a protection system that most XBOX consoles have as protection against flagrant copying of XBOX games.
To be able to run XBOX games that you have copied, you need to modify your XBOX. This can be a daunting task especially to beginners who are afraid of destroying their XBOXes with their tinkering.
According to most tech experts, there are a lot of ways to modifying your XBOX in order to accommodate the practice of copying of XBOX games. Some are quite complicated and only a tech expert could do while other ways can be expensive but easy.
One is to buy and install a MOD-chip. This will allow your console to play XBOX games that you have copied as well as play imported games from other countries with perfect sound and video with no problem at all. While it may seem that all you have to do is purchase a MOD-Chip and then voila, you have another think coming. There are actually a lot of things that you should consider when buying a MOD-Chip. Most recommend the Divineo Modchips, which are purported to be really reliable. Some of the popular brands are the Xecuter 2 and 3, Xenium, SmartXX, X-bit, Alladin, Chameleon and Xchip.
Another way in copying and using XBOX games is to change the BIOS of the XBOX so that it will no longer read the requirements of the digitally-signed software. This is basically reprogramming the whole BIOS.
You might also consider purchasing a bigger hard drive and just save all your games inside the XBOX. This way, you already have copy of your favorite games inside and would no longer need to swap CDs.
The third way is to do the game swapping technique, wherein you will first boot the original CD and then swap the copy once it has already booted up. This might be very complicated and will not actually serve your purpose in copying your XBOX games… that is to preserve your original CDs.

The Newest and Hottest PlayStation Games

One of the hottest PlayStation game to hit the shops is King Kong. Well, technically, the PlayStation game is not out yet because the creators are still in the midst of ironing out some creases but so far, a lot of people who have played the demo and beta versions already have raving reviews about it. And while the creators of the PlayStation game is still cleaning out the bugs in the PlayStation game, moviegoers are waiting with bated breath for the movie to come out.
It’s funny that in the ever-changing world of PlayStation, an old game like Tomb Raider is still popular among its fans. But this probably has something to do with the fact that there are constant updates to the Tomb Raider games and the intensity remains high even if you have played the PlayStation games a thousand times over. The latest version of Tomb Raider is the Tomb Raider Legend and living up to its reputation, Tomb Raider Legend is still all about lovely girls, muscular men, exotic landscape and location and challenging levels to get through.
The Warriors is another exciting game that has caught the attention of PlayStation fans. With the PlayStation game, you’re actually playing it before what actually happens in the movie itself. This 3 months lapse gives you enough time to get to know the characters better and see how the Warriors actually evolved into what they are in the movie. There’s a lot of investment in this PlayStation game because they even got some of the original actors from the movie to do the voices, which makes it all the more interesting and realistic.
Although the original God of War was very popular, the hybrid follow-up version of it is doing even better than the original one. It’s been said that the new version of God of War is even more realistic, following along the lines of Devil May Cry, Castlevania and Prince of Persia. The setting is Ancient Greece, this game has a very strong storyline and captivating characters to keep players totally engrossed for hours (maybe even days) on end.
With the success of Spyro, it makes sense for Insomniac Games (the creator) to come up with another similar game that is (hopefully) more successful and yes, they have one out called Ratchet & Clank. So far, after hitting the market, Ratchet & Clank creators have been rolling around in money because of the sales…PlayStation fans just love it!

Why The Best Flooring Idea Is To Install Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors have been around for hundreds of years. Wood floors were probably the first type of floor covering besides dirt. Hardwood floors can be one of the essential elements in designing your home. They offer a level of value and comfort no other flooring choice can. There are a number of benefits to owning and installing a hardwood floor.
One of the best things about hardwood floors is the lack of problem with regard to maintenance concerns. Because technology has allowed for the finish or stain of hardwood floors to require only sweeping for typical cleaning purposes, your floor will stay beautiful without the backbreaking scrubbing hardwood floors used to require. While the use of an appropriately recommended professional cleaning product will be required sometimes, a simple broom will take care of most of your cleaning concerns. It is important to note, though, you should never use anything on your hardwood floors that has not been manufacturer recommended. This helps to ensure your flooring will last a lifetime.
Durability means hardwood floors.
Another great reason to invest in hardwood floors is that they are environmentally friendly. Wood can not only be recycled, it is also a renewable source of material. Many of the products of yesterday like barns and old homes are recycled as hardwood floors. Moreover, wood products are incapable of harboring or collecting dust and other allergy particles. This means your family will suffer less risk of allergies or allergy induced medical conditions. Several health organizations endorse wood floors for people with health risks.
Additionally, hardwood floors are an excellent financial option. While some of the flooring is a bit more costly than the cheap alternative, hardwood maintains its value over time. It does not show the wear and tear that synthetic products do. This will only serve to increase your home's value in the long run.
There are many great reasons to invest in hardwood floors.
Finally, hardwood floors can come in a large range of shapes and sizes. In the past, there have been few choices in the hardwood floor market. Today's market, though, offers styles, colors, and species that will fit any décor. Hardwood floors make an excellent addition to any home.

10 Do’s Of Great Hair Care

If the amount of money consumers spend on hair care products annually is any indication, most people are concerned about the appearance of their hair and strive to attain beautiful, healthy and stylish locks. In fact, most will go to any lengths to achieve their desired look. From professional salon treatments to over-the-counter serums, hair care is a big business.
The only problem is that while many people are buying the right hair care products for their hair, they forget to follow basic hair care regimens that will guarantee the health and beauty of their tresses. Additionally, many are also causing needless damage to their hair by participating in unhealthy hair care behavior.
So, what should you do to make sure that your hair stays healthy, shiny and strong? Here are 10 essential "must dos" of great hair care.
Hair care dos
1. Use the right hair care products for your specific hair type. If you're hair is damaged, dry or color treated, use hair care products formulated to repair this damage and add much-needed shine and resiliency. On the other hand, if your hair is oily, use a deep-cleansing shampoo and light conditioner to keep your hair looking its best. The right products should be at the base of your hair care routine.
2. Get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks as part of your regular hair care routine. Even if you are growing your hair longer, it is still vital to make a routine trim a major part of your hair care routine. Snipping ends before they split will keep your hair looking healthy and save you hair care headaches in the end.
3. Protect your hair with hair care products that contain sunscreen.
4. Shampoo your hair only when it is dirty. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to shampoo your hair daily. Doing so can make your hair dry and hard to work with.
5. Turn to a professional for all of your hair care needs. Yes, kitchen beauticians and friends do not cost as much as putting your hair care needs in the hands of a qualified professional, but they often result in blunders that end up costing you more money than if you went to the salon in the first place.

7 Rules To Live By When Choosing An Affiliate Program Or Work at Home Business

dlbmSo you've decided to become financially independent! You've chosen to work at home. Congratulations! I'm sure this is a decision that can turn your life around and lead you to financial freedom.
But that is going to happen only if you're careful enough to let it happen! There are a few things you should really look out for when deciding to work at home.
When you set out to give the work at home business thing a try, you'll find out that this was just the easy part! The hard part is to discover which one is right for you.
With all these so called "opportunities" that flood the internet, you should be very careful in choosing a work at home business. To help you, I have put together a few simple rules :
Rule #1 : Try to avoid "get rich quick deals"
Now that's a golden rule! Usually, when something sounds too good to be true then it probably is!
Oh, I know these sound appealing and of course you would like to get paid for doing nothing (so would the rest of us!). But don't you think that if these people had the magic solution to making big money they would use it instead of trying to sell it to you for whatever price?
It's sad to know that so many people end up feeling frustrated when they realize that they have wasted their time and hard earned money. There are no magic tricks! Commitment and hard work instead, can make you rich.
Rule #2 : Find a program that you really like and can work with
Another rule that's essential! Say that you come across a program that requires you to sell life insurance. You hate insurance people, you think they're full of hype.
So what, the compensation plan looks great! What would you do? Would you join the program? Could you picture yourself selling life insurance even if you hate the very idea? The answer is that you're never going to make any money doing something you don't like!
The point I am trying to make here is, that you should go on and find out everything there is to know about the program you are interested in. Just spend some time doing an essential reading through the available material (company website, related articles etc). Try to get an overview of how the system works and if you need more information or if you get confused , go ahead and ask the person who referred you to the program for help. Doing your homework always pays off.
Rule #3 : Make sure you know exactly what you're getting for your money
There are just too many companies out there that present you with sales letters as long as a book but not even a hint as to what you are actually getting in return!
If the product they're selling is that good and is going to make you so much money, why hide it? Why only mention it in the last few paragraphs?
Ok, I know, it's the way sales are closed. Still, you would like to know exactly what you're buying. It could save you a lot of grief!
Rule #4 : Perform a background check on the company
The longer it has been around, the better. This way you know that you're dealing with an established company that will not go bankrupt 4 months after you join!
It has been known for people to lose their online businesses and commissions owed to them for this very reason. Choosing a quality company is essential but can prove critical to the survival of your work at home business.
Rule #5 : Make sure you're going to get all the help that you need
It's just typical for someone to join a program, pay his membership fee or buy a product and then be left in the dark, not sure what on earth to do next!
Again, I'm repeating myself here but this is important, try to get an overview of how the system works, who your upline people are and how they can help you.
If you need more information or if you get confused, go ahead and ask the person who referred you to the program for help. In this way not only will you get an idea of how the program is structured but you would also be testing your referrer to see if he/she will respond promptly to your need for help.
But first, you have to have an idea of how the program works.
Rule #6 : Check out the compensation plan
Ok, so you've joined a program which ,hopefully, is going to make you rich. Do you know how this is going to happen?
It's not necessary that you know every detail about the compensation plan from the first day that you join. But still, wouldn't you like to know if you're getting 5% or 60% commission on an average sale?
After all, it takes the same amount of effort to generate a sale. Wouldn't you like to be paid more?
Rule #7 : Do not spend much at the beginning
A legitimate work at home business should be able to operate at a minimum/low cost. You should not have to invest a lot of money in any home business. At least not in the beginning.
When you do decide to invest some money into your own home business, this should be your own decision, not someone else's and must arise from your understanding that a business is what you make it.
There are more rules that I can add to these and make a really long list but this is not my goal. My goal is to provide a clear path, a few steps that should be easy to follow through the minefield of schemes and "get-rich-quick" deals to a company you can really trust.
Using your own common sense is as important as having these rules in mind when looking for an opportunity or a work at home business.
Your decision to join a program should be the result of considering facts and should not in any case come from mere curiosity. Keep in mind that there are very few true work at home opportunities out there and you have to find the one that's perfect for you!
